The Bad Plus

Post by bovine »

Alright, so I've talked about them before. But their new CD just came out today and it's AWESOME! It's called "Suspicious Activity?" and is the first (and most likely only) album so far this year that I like better than HIPT. There's really no more I can say about it...words can't express how amazing this album is. Well, I guess I can say one more thing...while the writing and playing doesn't get any better than it is on their older CDs, this one is equally as good and I might even say that the production is a hair better.

Brutus is an honorable man
It's just coincidence that oil men will wage war in an oil rich land
And this one goes out to my man taking cover in the trenches with a gun in his hand
Then gets home and no one flinches when he can't feed his fam...

But Brutus is an honorable man...

i tried downloading them a while ago and found nothing but porn.

the only thing discouraging me from buying it blindly is that you have HIPT at number two this year..
that and i probably won't be able to find it

Number 2 is too high or too low? FYI, I would probably rank the Duhks self titled CD as tied for second along with HIPT. If you think HIPT should be lower than my second favorite this year, let me just say that The Bad Plus sounds absolutely nothing like OLP past or present.

Have you heard Brad Mehldau's(sp?) album "Largo"? If so, imagine that kind of sound but like 3857637849 times better and you have The Bad Plus.

Also, if you can't find it in stores, they have it on amazon and similar sites. I got it at the local FYE (where I just so happen to work). We only got one copy in, but I doubt it would have sold if I didn't buy it.

Is there anywhere to listen to some songs? I don't like buying cds blindly, I have limited cash at the moment. What kind of music are they?

Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf

Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...

Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...

So glad you could stay
Forever

He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand

You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..

So glad you could stay
Forever

hmm..

i found three songs on kazaa today. These guys are reeeally good at what they do, but i don't think i can get all that into anyone without vocals right now. They've got tons of talent, i'll give you that. and they sound great, but the lack of vocals isn't my cup of tea i'm afraid.

either way, good stuff, and i'll probably keep listening

Oh they're an all instumental band? I much prefer vocals as well, just instumentals don't hold me for long.

I used to think the same, but download a few songs if you can. I don't think they have sound clips on their site, but they're working on redoing the whole thing, so maybe the will soon http://www.thebadplus.com

Oh, and #2 (well, tied for second) is a well-deserved position for HIPT. I won't turn this into yet another debate about which OLP albums are better than others, etc. but this is a great album in all respects.

Just remembered where there's some streaming video http://www.npr.org/programs/asc/archives/live050503/ Unfortunately, a lot of it is interviews, but I think each clip has at least one song.

It's a great album as far as its technical aspects, it just doesn't appeal to me a whole lot.
I liked OLP best the further they strayed away from standard rock songs and the more they started experimenting. They've gone away from that, and it's taken most of my interest.
It's not a bad album to any extent; it just doesn't do a whole lot for me.

I agree to an extent. Happiness and SM remain my favorites (in fact, among my all-time favorite albums), but I still think HIPT is a great album. Give it a few more listens...expecially to WTSOYF and Leave The Light On. Okay, can a mod move this thread to the OLP area now?
