Some unfounded negativity. Plus thoughts on band's future
By far the worst comment I've heard about the new album is that it doesn't sound like old OLP. What's so stupid about this comment is that all albums are so different. I'm never in an OLP mood: I'm in a Clumsy mood or a Naveed mood, or a Spiritual Machines mood, etc. All the albums are so different; including Gravity and HIPT. What will, however, annoy me is if they make another album that sounds like Gravity or HIPT (their most popular album and most recent album).
What I love is that they finally did an album that is rather upbeat and hopeful. Is it poppy and produced? Yes. But have they ever done a poppy upbeat album? Never. I think that is the most important thing, that they're still making new sounding music and trying things that are new to the band.
As for the down point. The sound. Crank down Raine's voice, for the love of god. It overpowers EVERYTHING. If you listen really carefully to the songs you can hear some really nice guitar work, bass and lead alike. Mazur, especially, needs to crank up his guitar sound. Even in the Live DVD Mazur is way too soft.
In the end HIPT really is not the future of this band. This is more of a deviation (in terms of being super upbeat and only hearing Raine). While listening the the live DVD/CD I heard soundthing very cool: Counter melodys. Raine and Mazur 'fighting' each other near the end of Starseed sounded so cool. Mazur's talent needs to be highlighted. Not to say he's more talented than MT, but he's a different talent. He was utilized in HIPT a bit, but not enough, and when he was the sound was too soft. I expect a much loud/harder album from OLP for #7.
Overall though I would give the album a big recommendation to fans of rock of all sorts.

Mainstream?
I dunno anyone who's into mainstream music that'd enjoy SM... or... most OLP, for that matter.

i know a couple people who started listening to olp just because i was listening to them. their ABSOLUTE OMGS FAVZ!11! songs on sm are Life and Made to Heal.
the funniest part about this though is when they're singing Made to Heal out loud, they get to the chorus and sing "I'm adaeeeaeeaaeeeaaaalllll"
well, the title is in the chorus, sooo....
edité: their other two favourite artists are Christina Aguilera and Simple Plan.

SM Mainstream? I think Happiness is WAY more mainstream than SM was.. I agree though Nikki about people who crave mainstream music not really liking OLP in general. My friend likes really poppy music, like Simple Plan, Good Charlotte etc., he loved Where Are You? so I sent him that player thing we got from OMA and he finds the rest of the record unbearable..
I definately agree that SM was a bit mainstream (though there's nothing wrong with that; mainstream != bad). However, it was a different kind of upbeat. I find that HIPT has more of a driving beat to some of its songs, something SM didn't really have. When I think of SM's sound it's upbeat but in a mystical way. Alot of the songs on HIPT would not fit on SM and vice versa. I guess I should have clarified that in the original post.

agreed x 10000
if you don't listen to raine's voice in the new album, you can hear like, 2 guitar parts at once, plus maybe keys, and they are ALL crazy elaborate. the mixing makes it so that you only hear the voice... kind of. but there sure is a lot of detailed guitar in there. must be fun to play, probably.
