Song Meanings!
Song Meanings!
One thing I loved doing ever since I started listening to OLP is really trying to decipher, subjectively, what I think the songs mean. They are so packed with metaphors, and I can relate to so many sogns, especially on Happiness.
With this album, Ive really tried to understnad the song meanings. I think they're extremely deep, just presented is simple terms.
Look at Where are you, for all I know, that song could be about somebody calling someone in their house, and if they find them, its the best day of their life, who knows.
What are some of the songs meanigns you guys think are in the new album? Im interested to hear them.

Bored again by Happiness...
When I first heard "Picture" I thought it was a love song coming from someone in a relationship that was "on the rocks." However, when I gave it some more thought, I realized that it could very well be about the trouble the band had amongst themselves while recording. Basically saying "we've come this far, let's not forget the great times we had and let's try to make things work for the future."

Brutus is an honorable man
It's just coincidence that oil men will wage war in an oil rich land
And this one goes out to my man taking cover in the trenches with a gun in his hand
Then gets home and no one flinches when he can't feed his fam...
But Brutus is an honorable man...

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought when I first heard it. Then I thought about the band thing. I guess it could mean either, or something completely different!

i think finding the "true" meaning of a song is actually a pretty flimsy topic. not a bad one, of course, and it's very inspiring to think about the music from what raine meant for us to think, but from where i stand it's all personal opinion. what raine tells us about it being politically charged and all that are just guidelines for what you want to think. and you can take them or leave them.
anyway. if this thread is meant for speculating over what we think raine might have had in mind, then carry on and ignore me.

It's weird...while the lyrics seem so simple and less metaphorical, the meanings aren't quite as straightforward.
I especially noticed how "Picture" can be taken in variety of ways. When I first heard it, I thought it was about some failed romance. But when I found out about Raine's travels in Darfur and the struggle with his decision on whether to leave his family behind or stay...the song could either be about the guilt in leaving those people living in poverty behind (kind of like a "Don't worry, I'll be back" kind of thing) or the song could be for his wife and kids ("I'm coming back"..but the other way around). It goes both ways..I'm just wondering which way Raine was thinking about.

And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignore because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out
What's wrong

<<It's also the lyrical content of the album, which is a very Bono-esque -- some might say humourless -- mix of the personal, social and political such as: Boy, which is about the recent birth of Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk's second son Lucca; Where Are You, which came after his recent visit to Darfur and his interaction with the people there; and Wipe That Smile Off Your Face, which Maida calls "a blatant '(screw) you' to Bush." >>

I wouldn't immediately think that "boy" was about raine's son. The lyrics seems more directed to an older person... like his brother, that was my first impression.

I would have never guessed that "Boy" was about Raine's son...I always thought it was about a kid he met during one of his travels.

why would he say "don't go" to his son?
because his son is about to go play inside the hot oven, what else would you say?
