Questions that I've wanted answers to for several years.

Post by faninor »

What is the story behind these poems, supposedly written by Mike Turner and Raine? Are they real? How did they come to be on a few random fan websites?

Bloom
by Raine Maida.

Excited by the distance
Purple dreams terrorize open space
extremely ambitious
Gasping and sucking in air
a different air
We feel the struggle as it cools
Dawn reveals...
Their rooted charm makes for a
beautiful battle
We revel in their existence
We are patient and we listen
Or maybe we're simply the devil
with fabulous insistence

Sleeping In
by Raine Maida

Souls, although where we meet. This
Hose a lazy morphine.
But I, I'm stretching to see over
Your shoulders and over your priest
And paper cups and paper shoes
Give backs to me, but I see right through
And I know why you over slept
So gray, gray, slow rain.

I'm happier than you.
And I'm too high to follow through

Home, like the bed pan he needs.
And the hose that's not supposed to be
But I, I'm stretching to see over your
Flowers and Time magazines
Now I believe in what you do
The pain will cease
Well I know why you overslept
To be home, to be.

Been Thinking Lately
by Mike Turner

Been thinking lately, a lot about death
and how the one that matters the least is your own,
Not that it's inconsequential, just not that relevant.
The death of circumstance is the one that counts.
Death will change everything
From your pet bird to the person that gave you life.
At some point it will take them from you,
where once was a letter
will be blank
Not that this comes as any surprise,
you remember when you figured out that this whole mortality
thing
meant you as well.
Then, childlike, even death became about you.
You became singular, alone in this confrontation.
Truth is, it's not death that confounded you but life.
Your life isn't about you, it's about the things you go through, including death.
But not yours.
Your life will flow and ebb, with death the tide.
And some branches will not survive,
but the tree lives on.
People will come into your life and
change you.
And your life.
People will leave your life and
change you.
in your life.
And when you leave this life,
that will not
change you.

That last one was supposedly written in spring of 1999 according to one of the websites it appears on. Someone help!

Emtee wrote that last one, as far as I know.

Sleeping In was a b-side, wasn't it?

In other words, I haven't a clue.

You mean a rareity? I don't think OLP has any actual b-sides.

I've never read these poems. What sites were they on?

Well, yeah. I used the term b-side loosely. I believe I recall hearing of Sleeping In as one of the songs that we either have a really poor quality live recording of, or have only heard about as a track that got cut.

Indeed it is. I wonder if these lyrics were just transcribed from that, though, because it's really difficult to tell what the lyrics are in the recording (although it does seem accurate to those in the "poem").

Which brings me to my second question. Just where exactly does that recording of Sleeping In come from? It is one of the few recordings from my early collection of miscellaneous tracks downloaded from Audiogalaxy and the likes that I have not been able to learn where it came from. Most others, I have been able to find the exact shows that my mp3's came from, even with common tracks like Superman's Dead. Sleeping In, however, doesn't come from any live recordings that are known to me and appears on no setlists on Rich and Shelley's website. I have asked about it before, but I think none of us know.

Woah, that's freaky. I thought it was from a show I just never got around to downloading.

Mystery recording!!! :GASP:

Also, Robbo, please don't use b-side to mean "rare recording" ever again.

Before SM came out olp released the lyrics to the new album on their website and they included a couple songs that never made the album - I pressume that is where the lyrics to Sleeping in came from.

The recording. I always thought that Sleeping In, along with Ordinary, were released through the old Cracks in the Pavement at the CC.

Shopkeeper:
You must be a looney.

Customer:
I am not a looney! Why should I be tied with the epithet looney merely because I have a pet halibut? I've heard tell that Sir Gerald Nabardo has a pet prawn called Simon and you wouldn't call him a looney; furthermore, Dawn Pailthorpe, the lady show-jumper, had a clam, called Stafford, after the late Chancellor, Allan Bullock has two pikes, both called Chris, and Marcel Proust had an haddock! So, if you're calling the author of 'A la recherche du temps perdu' a looney, I shall have to ask you to step outside!

Hmm, well Ordinary was from a holiday greeting VHS tape they sent out to the PPU. And I kinda think that if the recording came from the band, they would've had a better quality recording than what Sleeping In sounds like. *shrugs*

It makes sense that it'd be from Cracks, though. The horrible sound quality would be because back when it was uploaded to the site, for people to be able to listen to a files that's 4 minutes long, it had to be tiny cos of slow modems. Definitely sounds to me like the reason for the poor quality is because of compression rather than a crappy mic. Maybe the band played it at a small private-ish show then put it on the site?

I wonder if we could find anyone with the skills who'd be willing to try to clean it up a bit? Maybe that guy who did OTIF from that show in Florida?

I thought about that, but I just don't see them putting something up on their website if it sounded like that. They did put the Superman's Dead demo on their website, after all.

And I've kind of had suspicions that the guy that cleaned up OTIF actually just had another, better recording of it . . . considering the cleaned up version included a few more seconds at the beginning and stuff. ;)

He had access to the original recording, though (the entire concert). He was the dude who recorded it's friend or something, wasn't he?

And, yeah, that's true about SD. Hmm. This is so intriguing. If it's not from Cracks, then to me it sounds like part of a radio show. Maybe a station was streaming and someone recorded the stream? Ooh, or even more explanation for the crap quality, maybe they held a mic up to their computer and recorded the stream that way.

Alright, Josh. I found your answers (though still no idea where the recording of Sleeping In is from). I don't know how you didn't find these, because they were on the first page of my Google search for Sleeping In. :*)**

Bloom (by Raine) was published in the fall '98 PPU newsletter.

Sleeping In (by Raine) was in the X-mas '98 newsletter ("it is actually a song, but is not included on Happiness").

Been Thinking Lately (by Mike) was a poem written for the Spring '99 issue.

So there ya go.
