Even as an American, I think the term "America Jr." is a term that sounds like another country is lower in status than the US, or trying to emulate the US. I don't think that is the case with Canada, and I understand why the Canadian members have taken offense to it. I don't believe that Corey intended it to be a negative remark, but I can understand why it is perceived that way, and I see it as a negative adjective as well.
US and Canadian cultures are similar only in general cases as Corey pointed out. Below the surface of those general similarities is where each nation becomes unique from the other.
Kimmy, your vote always counts. If I hadn't voted, Bush would have still won Tennessee by a large margin. It didn't really matter if I voted or not. But if everyone felt like their vote didn't matter, who would show up at the polls on election day?
It makes me sad to hear Americans say they "hate" the US because of the election results. You hate the country because the nationally accepted method for selecting a leader yielded a result that you didn't want? That's not a reason to hate the country you live in. You still have the ability to make a difference. It's now a matter of how hard will you push to make that difference? You don't have to support the President if you don't want to. That is your choice. You do, however, have the opportunity to make a difference so that he has no choice but to support you.
Canadians, you can have a voice in the US too. You can do it using the same avenues (aside from voting in the US) to let our government know what you are disagreeing with. Write or call your own leaders, write or call the US leaders. Make your voice so loud that it can't be ignored.

Bravo Matt. I agree... hating your country because you are dissatisfied with an election result is a bit extreme and border-line unpatriotic. I would never say "I hate my country" or "I'm ashamed of my country" regardless of who the leader is. Hate the leader, not the system. And if you hate the system, then maybe you don't belong as a member of it.

Josh: I'm unsure why you mentionned me because I didn't say that people should back their president. I agree with pretty much everyone here when I say that we all have the right to to make our own choices in thought and belief. If there was any misunderstanding, it may be because I think it is important that a leader of a country is recognized as the leader by the population. They may disagree with his policies, but you cannot deny in rational thought that he was elected under fair terms.

Now I understand what Corey was trying to say with "America jr." If you know Corey (and I do in a political sense) you would know that he is a very rational guy and doesn't toss terms out to belittle others.
It was a misunderstanding, but essentially Canada is a smaller America. There are differences, I agree, and I'm sure Corey would agree as well, but Canadians and Americans are closer to one another than Canadians and (for example) the Chinese, and have more similarities than differences.
Basically, Canada can be deemed as the midpoint between European and American culture. We have traditions, and political ideals from Europe, but modern culture is very much American, with maybe some exceptions.

I, personally, am against a unified North America. I feel that political philosophies are too different to be united as one. Canadians would want their "magnificient" health care system, and Americans would hate to pay as much tax as we do. I also feel that Canada could not benefit from a united continent, and many jobs and businesses would go south because frankly why would a country want to put factories and infrastructure in the coldest part of the country?
I just don't see how Canada could benefit.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

As for the whole election thing... I don't agree with the people wearing the "Bush ain't my prezzy" buttons, because there are better ways to make people vote your way, but I won't discourage them or anything. They wanna do it, then they wanna do it.
One plus to Bush in office is that it means two new faces in 08. Incumbent vs. Senator is sooooooo boring. I much prefer Senator vs. Senator.

Why the hell are we arguing about this again?!?! Has everybody forgotten the last thread that got LOCKED because we were arguing about this? I believe it was Nikki wasn't it, who said that this kind of stuff just makes a wider gap between the Canadians and Americans on this board? It's stupid and pointless to argue this. Lets put it this way, Some of us are American, some are Candadian, some are European, Asian, African, whatever, were all from some country and damn proud to be from that country. We have similarities and differences, just like individual people. Let's not get into all this crap again. No country is another countries junior anything, each country is their own country, lets leave it at that.
