See, to me, Don Cherry is way more American than Canadian. The loud voice, obnoxious comments, over-the-top tacky clothing... that is trademark south o' the border stuff. That's not really Canada's style.

cherry pushes a lot of buttons and makes some very...objectionable comments, especially when it comes to talking about race. chicken swedes? russian bashing? he goes a little too far sometimes. i can see both sides of this arguement; he is the epitome of those guys everyone knows who sits in a hockey rink watching the kids play and coaching everyone from the sidelines all day, and then joins the fellas in the beer league for a drink after they play. on the other hand; he's got a brutual mouth and a large portion of Canada is so politically correct it hurts. cherry is not the greatest canadian in the sense that he's accomplished things that will ressonate thruoghout the ages; he's a "great canadian" in the sense that he represents those small town folks, in the sense that he's full of fierce pride for his nation, and in the sense that he inspires that pride in others.

do i want him winning? not particularly. will i care if he does? not a mote.

Honestly if you watch Coach's Corner every week, you'll see that he rarely makes outlandish remarks. It just so happens that because of his stature when he actually does make a remark everybody and their goat knows about it and it makes front page news nation wide.

Hal Anderson from Power 97 in Winnipeg was also on the list somewhere. Does anyone know what he did to strenghthen Canada or somehow further its growth?

Hal is damn cool though, and Winnpeg's Power 97 is probably the best rock and alternative rock station in Canada. They break out lots of 90's gems even, instead of ust skipping to the 70's. The only other station that even competes is The Edge.

i should be on the list
for umm
uhhh
doing... stuff..
yeah
thats
it
stuff

anyways
in regards to grapes..
as jim said.. hes not THAT bad, i happen to be a big fan of the montreal canadiens.. a team that cherry tends to enjoy... err.. well bashing.. to say the least.. i, for one, think he does go over the line at times but in general, when he is dealing strictly with hockey and how its played and leaves out where said players are from then hes a good guy

having said that however, there are many more canadians much more deserving of the title of "greatest canadian" then him, ie. lester pearson, sir john a. mcdonald, wilder penfield, laura secord, david suzuki, louis riel, etc.

oh the main building and the bar here on campus are called place riel and louis' respectively after mr. riel
go fuck yourself.

seeing as how this seems to be the only greatest canadian thread.

During the final battle, pretty much all my favorite people that live in this great country were in the same room. sam roberts and perdita all the way!

I FUCKING LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND TOMMY DOUGLAS WON!

*sigh* there was so many good ones, but my heart was with pearson.

I was rooting for Trudeau...

My girlfriend worked at the show last night. She helped with the audience and did some various odd jobs like seat filling. Afterwards she met a bunch of people at the after party. I only talked to her briefly but she had a pretty long conversation with george stromboulopolus, and she talked to Melissa Auf Der Maur, and some guy from this hour has 22 minutes, who was drunk.

i believe the reason that hal anderson from power 97 in winnipeg was on the list was because he tried to encourage the listeners to vote at the greatest canadian website. i'm not sure if there was a marathon or something, but lots of people voted because of him
