Why is everyone so negative about OLP lately?

This is for you, this is for us...

i think OLP is getting tired of performing all the time. it's been a very long time since they first stepped foot on a stage and saw thousands of people singing and cheering them on. I think they've just gotten used to everything, kinda like we have. You know when Raine's gonna grab steve...Birdman of course. Maybe they see trying new things as being worthless..i really don't know if i make any sense at all, especially because everything i was thinking was already posted, but what the hell, i tried. Some things really make me mad though. As much as i LOVE olp and appreciate their music, I kinda see them coming off as lazy. Maybe, some old fans need to show them what they're doing. At a show, everyone cheers and all. I would pressure the band like when the song is over and they're like "this song's called innocent" i would scream at the top of my lungs NO! PLAY POTATO GIRL! maybe they would react at their next show..you could give it a try. (besides the fact that olp would hate me 4 the rest of my life.) it's too bad olp never comes to new jersey much, because i would really try and make em wonder what they're doing... i'd leave a note on the tour bus hehe saying exactly what ihopethisisgoodbye said in all of his posts. That'd make em think. okay well i really don't even understand what i just said because basically what i said could never be a reality, but i always kinda hoped. Maybe if i had the chance to, i'd try my hardest to have them come around because pretty much gravity does suck, IMO, and it breaks my heart to hear them play SOT over and over. And i also think emtee had a huge impact on the band. Too bad he'll never come back..okay now i'm gonna go off in a corner and cry now...

Hey kids. Remember when Spiritual Machines came out? Remember how everyone was so excited because a new album was there for us to listen to? So do I. But want to know what I remember the most? I remember going to their concert a few days before the album came out, and them playing

Well, all of us on this board were OLP fans at some point. Now that they feel they should make "rock" music instead of "good" music, I feel a little sick. Is it wrong to want OLP to take their time and try to come out with something on the level of Clumsy or Happiness? If they took their time with the music, this wouldn't be such a problem. But look, they flopped with Spiritual Machines, so they're putting out two studio recorded albums in three years, along with a live cd, which I still haven't bought. Take your time, think about your songs, actually find a reason to write again. No one wants to hear stuff like Made Of Steel anymore.

I've grown up with OLP, and after hearing their new stuff, I've moved on. I'm not an OLP fan anymore.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I think the band needs to hear some of this. Even if they could care less, it's worth a shot telling them what we think. Maybe, just maybe, they'll wake up and realize that their music is crap now. I used to try and find some good in their new stuff, but I listened to a few way old bootlegs, and thought, "Wow. These songs are amazing, and yet they weren't put on an album. They're way better than their new stuff."

I bought the Live CD, but, I don't know if I'm ever going to buy Gravity.

But anyway, what do you all think about telling the band what we think? I mean, take out the profanity and try to say it in a relatively respectful way, but, I think they need to hear some of this if they haven't already.

I dunno. It seems like a good idea right now, but, I haven't got much sleep so I don't know how good it's gonna sound after I'm well rested. :freak:

Wow, I wish I was at THAT show!

It seems like more people on this board hate OLP than like them! :freak: Yeah, Raine's antics at their shows are repetitive (if I didn't know any better, Camrose might as well have been Edmonton) but no one can say that the energy's not there. When I went to Camrose, I cried when I heard Naveed/Life. The emotion was there and the fans were into it. I was right beside some guy who was singing along to ALL their songs! It was amazing! People were still chanting "OLP" after their encore hoping they'd come back. No one did that for any other band. What amazes me about OLP is the emotion and energy they and the fans put into their shows. Yeah, sure...some of the stuff they do seems rehearsed but that shouldn't take away the fact that they put their hearts into their shows. It's obvious it's there. Unless, it's just the shows I go to.

That doesn't mean I don't have expectations for OLP. Yeah, I wished they'd make another "Clumsy" but I realized, just like me, they've grown up. They're not the angry rockers they used to be in the days of Naveed. You could say the same thing about Alanis Morissette or Sugar Ray. People change and I think it's hard to accept that. So I'll take what I can get. I appreciate the fact that OLP have been around for this long. They could have just given up, but they didn't. Gravity isn't the best but it's not the worst. There's something there whether people see it or not. I'm just glad OLP haven't taken the same route as Blink-182 where ALL the songs sound the same. I see diversity in OLP's songs. "Bring Back the Sun" is not the same as "Made Of Steel", for example.

And considering these guys are workaholics (since when have they stopped working and taken a break?), do they really have time to learn songs they haven't played in a while? If I could give these guys any piece of advice, I'd tell them to take a longer break like they did after Naveed...come back in three years and come back with a bang...like when they did during the release of Clumsy.

Are we the only fans that see this though? How many people go to the CC? Do they talk about OLP like we do?

I don't know if the band would care what we thought or not... I mean it's not like we're their only fanbase.

I haven't been to the CC in a while, but from what I remember quite a few people were disappointed with Gravity on the same level as the people here.
I'm sure there are plenty of fans who don't like gravity, only they aren't part of the online community.

They might care what we think. They might not. But it's worth a shot, don't you think? I mean, then we can say "At least we tried."

I hope this is Goodbye...........go away if you are not a fan.........you are irritating. You have points........and they are legitimate for you.......but really, this is a fan board. Be constructive.......you just run down the band about how things use to be.........argh......I know it was better back then but it really does nothing for anybody...........tell Raine if it bothers you..maybe he'll listen. I just hate coming on here and listening to a former fan rip into them........Go away if that's going to be your game.

His points are also legitimate for others. Just b/c Alan isn't a hardcore OLP fan anymore, (or even a fan for that matter) doesn't mean he can't have an opinion.

That's true........I apologize for being so harsh............I am really sick of hearing the same shit over and over however. Saying how it use to be does nothing!!!! Its the same broken record. It runs everyone down.........you know.......a little bit more positive thinking would be nice. I'm not saying you have to like it, but to come on to an OLP fan board and get ripped for liking Gravity is pretty ironic. Again, my apologies.

seeing as how 70% of the regular posters (even the owners) on here don't talk about OLP, i think it's fine that Alan's here.

I think everyone that has something negative to say only says it because they're disappointed that they've turned into what they are today. I still love them and yes, the negative comments do get on my nerves (I don't usually come here much anymore because of them) but I think people are just mainly let down.

Don't know what the point of that is, but oh well.

Honestly. The people that listened to OLP before Gravity came out were flat out disappointed. There's no way around it. OLP chose making money over making good music. When your favorite band makes 4 cds of perfection, then comes out with something like Gravity, you're fucking let down. There's no way around it.

So I'm let down and I put faith in OLP coming out with better music in the future. They have four new songs out, and guess what? They all suck. They're not great, good, or mediocre, they're just flat out bad. So OLP let me down in the present, and their future is letting me down even more. If I can't say how disappointed I am in a band that is capable of making good music, then I should leave. This is bullshit. I have listened to OLP for years now, and everything was great. Now their new stuff just says, "We'll abandon what our fans want so we can have a fucking gold record to hang on our wall and some more money in our pockets."

This isn't the same band anymore. The only original member is Raine. Stop fucking ruining the OLP name. Change your band name to "Mediocre Corporate Rock Band" and stop making shit under the name that your real fans used to respect. You're embarassing yourself and the name you use when you come out with shitty music. Use the OLP name when you can come out with a cd that could be considered good. Until then, stop making music under the name.

I don't even tell people I like them anymore because all I hear is, "I like SOT and Innocent!" Fucking sick. It's just fucking sick.

I was thinking a while ago that they should just change their name and make a new start of it, but the problem I see in that is that then we'd never hear their old songs live anymore, and I know they don't play that many old songs live . . . I guess I'm still clinging on to the old olp, and hoping someday they will return to artistic prosperity.

When the first OLP song you hear is Starseed, then it gets progressively better all the way to In Repair, you expect something on that level. Now I hear A Story About A Girl on the radio. No thanks, I'd rather hear Thief over anything new. That's that.

Umm... OLP likes what they're doing right now. They don't really care what their old fans want. It's unfortunate, but I'd rather not like what they're doing and have them like it than to have them doing stuff just for other people. If you don't like what they're doing, find some bands who's music you do like. There's lots of great stuff out there.
