Frog, what you're missing with comparing pedophilia with those other illnesses is the fact that those others don't hurt people... and certainly not innocent children. Regardless of whether you see it as an illness or not, you should realize that innocent childrens' rights are FAR more important than some guy who can't keep his thing in his pants when around them. :roll:

Schizophrenics kill people all the time. Just recently that one guy shoved some woman in front of a TTC train in toronto.

Except you know, themselves, and the other people and staff in there.
And then they get released as soon as they start taking their medicine recently.
And as soon as they're released they feel fine and stop taking the medicine again.
Etc. etc.
There's no easy solution to ANY of this.

Anyway, my argument was that these people need to be put someplace where they can't hurt others (or at least others who have NO idea what's going on... professionals hired to deal with these people are well aware of any consequences that may happen while at work)... the frog's talking like they should just get some therapy and thrown back out on the street where they can continue to molest children.

Well no, they need to repay their debt to society, but I also believe that rehabilitation is possible and neccessary. I think that it would be considered prejudice to not offer these people help, and then persecute them for it. Therapy can do a lot of good, so can medication but it doesn't always work. I just disagree with some of the things that people have to say here, where they just believe that they should be locked up and have the keys thrown away. They're sick, they need help. They owe it to society to get help, and we owe it to them to offer it.

I'm not sure if pedophilia is a mental disorder of any kind and can be treated with medication, because it never came across to me in that way... I thought all pedophiles did it with a clear sense that it was wrong, like rapists.

Ok, so what I said was slightly extreme, that they deserve to rot in hell. Let me clarify my thoughts on this. If everything in this world was black and white, then yes he would deserve to rot in hell. I don't get to judge that, God does. Only he knows all the circumstances, thankfully. But, as a justice system, we're not privvy to that knowledge. You may think me cruel, but I don't think we owe him anything more than a common criminal. I like to think of myself as a fairly tolerant person. I disagree with most people on this board about most things, but I try to see where they're coming from. Maybe your problem is with my belief system, and not my supposed lack of tolerance?

That's why they shouldn't be lumped in with people with actual mental disorders who have no idea what they're doing wrong.

That's a fallacy, you haven't justified your comment at all, it's like saying that the sky is purple beause I said so. Medical experts and psychologists have conclusively stated that pedophilia is a mental disorder and that its vitims do not have a true understanding of what they are doing. I would atest that the majority of pedophiles probably can't see the problem with the way they think.

Heaven forbid! IF you did something like that, then you would obviously have some sort of mental disorder.

that's not entirely true. one of the biggest myths is that people with mental problems are violent and dangerous to themselves and others. that's what my abnormal psych prof said.

Well pedophiles aren't always dangerous to themselves or others either. They rarely act on their impulses.
