He was a pretty weird guy. I think he had megalomania or something. He wanted the new HQ for Roman Catholism to be in Canada instead of Rome...at least, I think that was him.

Weird.

Wait a minute! He didn't look like that in the movie! Those Heritage Minutes lie.

Louis Riel is a huge hero here in Manitoba. He did after all found our province...and basically start the entire west. Not to mention fought for the rights of both french and metis. But outside of Quebec much of Eastern Canada still doesn't aknowledge him. Some school's still teach that he was vicious rebel who was hung in Regina. I don't think he even got a pardon did he?

But yeah Riel is the man

The only person I've heard of is Laura Secord. She makes great chocolates so she gets my vote :D

(and yes, I know about the non-chocolate stuff too!)
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

Yeah, to be perfectally honest, I've never taken a day of history in my life. I would fail so miserably its not funny. I can't even keep track of the names of people I do know!
None the less, I have heard of Louis Riel, but if you asked me what he did I'd look at you funny and say "I donno, but he was on the Heritage minutes, right?"

But then again, you guys probably don't know a whole lot about John Cabot.

Actually when a bunch of my friends went to Quebec over the summer, one of them went to a museum in a university (maybe McGill?) anyway, they had a timeline of Canada's foundation, and it was horribly wrong. They said Quebec was the oldest province. uhh...no. That was Newfoundland. Quebec also had the oldest city. Nope, still wrong. And John Cabot discovered Nova Scotia. Who the hell told them that? And on the chart, no one actually discovered Newfoundland. It just appeared. lol.

Did you know that Canada was named through ignorance?

It's true!

Jaques Cartier and his crew met up with some Natives, and the Natives pointed to the village and said "Kanata", their word for "village". Then Cartier said "Canada! That must be the name of this country!" His translator guy quickly pointed out that it was in fact their word for "village", not the name of the country. But Cartier insisted in his French arrogance that it was the name of the country.

 So true...

...

You're kidding, right?

Newfoundland joined the Confederation in 1949. Quebec and Ontario joined in 1867.

Newfoundland may have been discovered earlier, but it didn't join Canada until 1949.

Yeah, its the youngest province but Newfoundland has the oldest settlement, and St. John's is the oldest city in North America.

I probably should have worded that better.

Louis Riel did not make the top ten of greatest Canadians. Mind you, Don Cherry somehow made it so that explains a lot. Cherry is second right now amongst the male voters, which is absurd.

Tommy Douglas is right now winning... but there is clearly a lack of minorities and no women in the top ten.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

I can't believe Don Cherry got into the top ten. I mean, if he had done something significant, like something besides just being on Hockey Night in Canada, then it would have made sense.

Hal Anderson from Power 97 in Winnipeg was also on the list somewhere. Does anyone know what he did to strenghthen Canada or somehow further its growth?

It's stupid that cherry got in so high, but CBC must have advertised the poll about fifteen times per hockey game last year. So i'm not all that surprised.
