"Don't look for a pitt bull ban from the BC government. Ontario is considering the move after two of the dogs almost tore a man's arm off over the weekend in Toronto. Our Solicitor General Rich Coleman says the laws we have are enough to deal with dog attacks case by case. In Vancouver, pitt bulls have to be muzzled. Winnipeg banned the breed 15 years ago and saw pitt bull complaints drop from 30 a year to nothing."
Now I don't understand how they ban the breed. Do they just not allow anyone to purchase/breed pitt bulls anymore? For the people who already own pitt bulls, they get to keep their dog and that's it?
"The Windsor HS has so many pitt bulls they are keeping them in quarantine in small cages and they are all going to be killed. It was sad to see, the dogs were all wagging their tails happily when the cameras approached."
Now if that's Windsor's idea of solving the problem, that's pretty freakin' ridiculous.
Vancouver on the other hand seems to have the right idea:
"Potential owners screened through Hug-a-Bully must agree to take responsibility for their new pet and commit to training, caring for and exercising their dog. Owners should have breed knowledge and also have a thick skin. The group insists owner and dog go to obedience class. "If you are not willing to train your dog, this isn't the breed for you," the group advises. "These dogs started getting a bad reputation about 10 years ago and I think it started with some of the subcultures who decided to own them," she said. "They've done these dogs a world of hurt.
It's not the dog but the owner who's to blame." According to Hug-a-Bully's website,
www.hugabully.com, pit bulls are no more vicious than golden retrievers. Hug-a-Bully admits, however, that due to over-breeding and severe abuse, some pit bulls have temperaments far removed from the original breed standards."
"We believe in only placing the best examples of this breed, as this will be the only way for these wonderful breeds to restore their reputation that has been so badly damaged by the media and irresponsible owners. We only place dogs with rock-solid temperaments and accept absolutely NO human aggression. We avoid placing dogs with high levels of dog aggression, or who are known escape artists. It is our goal to ensure that all dogs placed by us are both physically and mentally sound. All potential adoptive homes are thoroughly screened, as it is our wish that each dog we place will serve as a breed ambassador!"
