I think the problem with our little discussion here is that we've sort of agreed to dissagree, so until someone else comes in and challenges one of us, we're stuck.

all faith is inherently irrational.

the only time people pray is when they're helpless. they ask God to do things that they themselves can't do.

I work with a guy who goes to a church where statements start of with "Assuming there is a God, He...."

Some weird religion where they don't deny the existence of God but don't necessary embrace it either.

Agnostic?

Can't be agnostic. I didn't think agnostics actually had an organized church.

Nah, that's not it. I'd probably know it if I heard the term.

I agree with you mostly. But I'll just say something so you can argue ;)

What about faith? Yes it may be irrational, but does that make it not true? My religion is based mainly on faith, and it is the fastest growing religion in the world, so we must be doing something right. Maybe I should say we. Eh.

when I pray I don't ask God for anything, I see that he's already given me everything. asking for diving intervention would violate free will, the only reason we're here, as I see it.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

It's not intervention because God never forces anything on you. He can guide you, he could even use a miracle and put a prophet in front of your face or split the Red Sea for you. But you don't have to do it. God wants you talk to him. If you don't feel you can ask him for anything, that is fine. But it is also fine to ask him to give you the strength, courage, and faith to see what needs to be done and how to get it done.

Really? Usually I am an idiot at explaining my religion to people.

Thank you, that made me feel better :)

Why do you call it LDS and not Mormonism? That's the term most people are familiar with.

Of course. But there shouldn't be mandated prayer in a public place, either. How would you feel if you went to a football game and someone came over the loudspeaker and said, "Hey, isn't it terrific how there's no god!", and everyone started cheering or chanting. It might be no big deal to you, but then what if you went to court and they made you swear on a book called "God is Bullshit", or if they had posted on the wall 10 rules that started with "1. There is no god and people who worship one are stupid", or if after a national tragedy the President came on TV and said, "our country will unite in our atheism and attack the terrorists", or if a certain former president said, "religious people aren't real citizens anyway", or if the money said, "we don't trust in any god"?

Would you then feel differently about the church/state issue? Be honest. All of the above have been done to or said about atheists, and people just ignore it. There's no excuse for alienating citizens based on their beliefs or lack thereof.

 i agree with that, actually I'm thinking most faiths have a view like that, not just Mormans, but well said.

quick question: Do you guys consider yourselves Christians (your religion)? cause i've heard there's a significant differance between Mormans and [other] Christians religions. Do you believe Jesus to be God, or to be some kind of prophet or saint?
