Although Nirvana is one of my favorite bands ever (tied with OLP), I must agree with you. (IMHO) he was a great songwriter and a really good guitarist, but not the best as far as a guitarist. With that type of music, you don't need to be among the best. At live shows (except the few acoustic shows they played) and on recordings, the guitar was usually so distorted that if he played a wrong note or two, it would be difficult to notice that any mistake was made. Although I don't like the other artists mentioned (except for Mike and Steve) as much as Nirvana, I would definatly agree with Hendrix, Clapton, and Santana. I would also have to add Tim Renyolds. There are also a bunch of classical guitarists that I've heard who were quite amazing, but I don't remember any of their names right now.

Agreed. Anyone who plays guitar for a week can play Nirvana songs.
Jimmy Page. Definetly.

santanna is highly overrated.
either clapton or jimmy page is probably the single best guitar player around, although cadogan and morello do make a case for themselves.

Clapton. Hands down. I don't think Santana is the greatest. Yeah, he's great, but I think there's better out there.

Isn't Django Reinhardt dead? I hardly think most people know about gypsy guitarists.

Jimmy Page the best guitarist ever, Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix. then again, I like John Fiore, Mike Turner, Steve Mazur, and John Thyberg, all kickass guitarists

Nothing like using the words "mad skills" in normal conversation.
