i thinkit's almost more of an addiction. These guys get a rush out of it and continue to go back to it.

Again, it's an involuntary thought process, they just can't control themselves. So, yeah.

Ok I gotta call you on this one. Insanity is a disease. Urges to do all sorts of things can be a disease. Depression is a disease. At what point do we stop making excuses for ourselves and take responsibility for our actions? They can have those urges, no matter how disgusting they are to me, but they shouldn't act on them. EVER.

A person with schizophrenia doesn't want to act on the things that they see or hear? They can't control it. It's like asking someone with Parkinsons to stop twitching. They don't have control over it. I agree with you, I am not saying that what they do is good or that it is okay EVER to act on them. It isn't something they can help.

I geuss I disagree. There is a line to be drawn somewhere. Not every evil thing is a disease. I don't even think it's comparable to Parkinsons or Schizophrenia.

Wow, the tolerance on this board just warms my heart.

I can tolerate people who have urges to do all sorts of bad things. But acting on them is something else. How can you possibly justify acting on an urge, classified as an illness, as something that requires tolerance? It reminds me of all these people pleading insanity for the crimes they make. For every possible bad thing they can do "God made me this way. How can I deny my urges?". It's just a way to get out of responsibilty. I don't call it tolerance at that point, I call it justifcation for evil.

I agree with Cass in that people should be held responible for their actions. People should be able to control themselves. That's why I see pedophilia as more of an addiction because the person may not want to commit the acts but gets wrapped up in the rush he/she might get from the action.

Addiction is considered to be a mental health disorder. Just like it can be cured (or at least have its effects lessened) so too can pedophilia. There's therapy and medication.

Yes yes, your sites are nice. I believe it. But do you really think that just because it's an illness that can be classified that they no longer need to be held responsible?

Well.

I suck at physiology, mostly because I have an illness that I won't specifiy, but causes me to procrastinate and to have severe concentration problems. Obviously, I should be allowed special circumstances because of this illness. I really don't believe this is my fault, but I can do something about it. But since fault has to be assigned, who is at fault? God? The fates?

I don't really get this. I think every single person no the planet should be held accountable for their own actions unless there are extreme circumstances.

Yeah, they get help. They spend time trying to improve themselves, so that they can meet society's expectations. I mean, it's not like you just plea insanity and then you're out the door 15 minutes later. Sometimes, once insanity is plead; they have to spend the same ammount of time they would in a prison in a mental care facility getting help (and that's if the judge/jury buy it).

J-Neli wrote:In this case where there was some stalking I don't know if I feel sorry for him, but in cases where you find adults falling in love with children (a la that school teacher who had 2 children with one of her students) I often think about history and how it was common for girls to marry at 13 (this is still common in other countries).

I don't think that there was stalking in this case, although reading the article posted above kind of made it sound like there was.

Also I agree with Cass that Steve should be held responsible for his actions.
