A proposition called the "good host" law is put up for a vote. Basically, it says there is no smoking inside ANY building, including private homes/apartments as the smoke makes the air unpleasant for any guests you may have over who don't smoke. The majority says "yea." Is this okay?
that's quite fine with me

Fine. Next up, a law prohibiting the possession of any music CD's with any profantiy on them at all, as they may offend some of your more sensitive guests, and aren't up to community standards. Is that fine?
Jim: Looking back through the thread, I see that I replied to one of your posts that "explains" yourself, and you never bothered to reply to my post. So, no, you haven't explained yourself.

hey since people are trying to ban smoking in public places, i suggest we ban chewing with your mouth open, little babies and small children in public places too cause they all annoy me
thats about as ludricous as your "smoking ban" in public places
just because you don't like something someone else is doing, you cant just go and ban it, otherwise we'd end up not even being able to leave our homes because people would ban everything that annoys them.

Yeah, I would love to ban kids from public places. I am sick of going out to eat and having to deal with the token baby that is crying and the parents that won't take contol of their kids and lets them act like obnoxious brats. I don't need your little shithead screaming in my ear. Take control of it or leave.
Don't like how that sounds? Well, it makes about as much sense as banning smoking.

Those things annoy you. Second hand smoke
harms you.
Therein lies the difference.

annoyances in a restaurant can be harmful
they can raise my stress level , therefore raising my blood pressure, cause a possible heart attack
done.
and how is me sitting on the other side of the restaurant in a seperate area smoking a cig next an open window harmful to you

Firstly, annoying kids aren't directly harmful to you. If your blood pressure and general tolerance level is that unstable, you should probably be in some form of medical facility.
Smoke travels from one side of the restaurant to the other quite easily. Especially towards said open window.
What about a bar? Or a pool hall? Those places are always filled with smoke.

Yeah! I can't go there without my parents knowing cause I come back reeking of smoke and they can tell!
</stupid teenager logic>
seriously though

then don't go
no one makes you go to the bar
why should i cut my enjoyment at a place like that to comfort you?
what makes non-smokers better than smokers that they have to have their way in public places?
there are ALOT of people who dont smoke normally but smoke socially at the bar/pool hall/bowling alley.
and don't cry about not being able to go the bar and come back smelling like smoke so your parents know you were there.
its called perfume or febreze
you say we are infringing your rights to be a in smoke free environment, but what about OUR right to be able to smoke?
it IS legal to smoke, we aren't breaking any laws by smoking cigarettes.
i dont care if you dont like the smoke, i dont sit there and blow it in your face
if you dont like it, dont go. its that simple.
you cant just go banning things because a group of people "dont like it when they go there"
i dont like going to work and having a bunch of idiot people ask me blatantly stupid questions, so should i crusade to have them banned from the store i work at? no, i shouldn't , because im there by choice, not by force

A single hour sitting in a bar is not going to give you cancer, and if your lungs are that messed up, you should probably be in a medical facility.
I DO work in a resturant, and the stress of dealing with children running around me while I'm carrying drinks/plates/really hot food and screaming, and the crying, and the parents trying to force a shy child to order leading the brat to whisper into their lap and it's already been a full two minutes and I have 3 other tables that just sat down and JUST ORDER THE DAMN FOOD.
All that crap, coupled with the screaming (PROTIP: The noise level in a busy resturant is typically ~85 decibels. This is the level of noise at which constant exposure can begin to cause permanant damage to your sense of hearing. A baby's screaming can hit over 110 dB) DOES in fact pose a danger to the health of the people in that resturant.
So I now propose a ban on all conversation in resturants. Clearly, for the sake of the population, we can all not talk while out and about. That kind of thing is best saved for home.
What about a bar? Or a pool hall? Those places are always filled with smoke.
And? If you don't like it
don't go.

For the last time, this is about second hand smoke harming non-smokers.
One hour doesn't necessarily cause cancer... But everywhere you go, you have to breathe in the smoke. That's the problem. And it's not just lung cancer, either. Breathing in smoke is never healthy.
You're exaggerating on the sound level causing harm, and you know it. There is no stable, healthy person who can't handle working in the noise of a bust restaurant. Raise your stress level? Sure. What job doesn't?
But no one should be subjected to second hand smoke if they want to get their only source of income.
You've said that non-smokers should just go somewhere else. Why should we be forced to go somewhere else? You (meaning smokers) choose to smoke. And you can go for an hour without it. Step outside if you want to feed your addiction, keep the smoke away from the people who choose not to pollute their lungs.
