Waited

Post by Narbus »

Has the band ever given an offical "here's what this song's about" for waited?

Near as I can tell, it's when a friendship is over, but you don't want it to be.

Thoughts, feelings, suggestions?

They never come right out and say okay this song is about __________ or this is what it means .. it's all up to the person listening and whatever they take from that song, that's what it means to them

Waited is one of my favorite songs .. to me it's about losing someone you love and missing them. Hoping they'll come back to you and waiting for them :(

I find it incredibly annoying that the band never says, "Dude, this is what that song means, line for line, note for note..."

I always feel dumb interpreting songs for myself. I always think I'm wrong, so I usually just stick with the obvious. For instance, I always thought "Waited" had something to do with having waited... for something...

I could be wrong.

...

:wtf: I need sleep.

I like that they don't say what the song means .. to Raine it's gonna mean one thing .. to someone else it can mean something entirely different, and that's okay .. that's how music should be. It annoys me more when people get into arguements about what a particular song means .. music should be looked at with an open mind and an open heart and if certain songs remind you of someone or something or if a song makes you feel better or feel you can relate to it or not feel alone ... then that's what's important .. not analyzing it down to the last word and being told what it means .. that's just my opinion though...

I can understand that, and I guess I don't really mean that I want Raine to spell out what he means by every line. What I mean is songs have more meaning when I know a bit of their background. For instance, when I first heard Thief, I thought it was beautiful and haunting; now that I know the circumstances behind that song, I can really respect it - and Raine - a lot more. And I can find more meaning for myself, and more parallels to my own life, than I could before.

I have no idea what Waited is about, although I love that song. It's hard to make a connection when you really have no clue what the writer was intending. Kind of like hearing a poem read aloud in another language. Sure, it may sound beautiful, but you're not going to get much out of it.

I can and do come up with my own theories and meanings in songs, but knowing what the original writer intended adds a whole new dimension to the experience.

I hope that made sense; it's much too late to be thinking coherently...

 I think it's interesting to know what a song is about, but I'd much rather experience it my own way. that's one thing I always loved about OLP. the lyrics are (were) so ambiguous. it's also one of the reasons I love Chris Cornell & Soundgarden so much. I remember being really disappointed when Chris revealed in an interview that Like Suicide was written about a bird that had flown into a window on his house and broken it's neck. the song was never really special to me after that.

I was going to school today and I was listening to Happiness and Waited came on. I just felt like rolling out of the car. I can't listen to that cd when I am not happy, or I just want to die. And I too, think it's about losing some one and waiting for that person so come back.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

yeah i think waited has a little bit clearer meaning

one of raine's pre gravity emo songs.

and it's not just losing someone, it's that person flat out leaving you. stranded. alone. and completely helpless. fuck. i hate people like that. waited rocks. it should help all you emo brats to stop waiting for those heartbreakers. (HINTHINT)

Do you have a problem with everyone? So far, you've been a dick to everyone on this board, and I still tried to tolerate you. Now you're being a dick to me, and I am trying to tolerate it. But you know what? Let us know when your girlfriend dumps you, so everyone on the board can be a complete asshole to you, and you'll have no one willing enough to listen to your problems of getting over your ex. Dick.

i tried to cheer you up.

i just did in this thread.

this girl left you.

why be sad you know?

look.

i'm saying, i've been there. i used to be sad about girls. then a girl went too far i guess. i broke up with her by throwing a bag of shit that belonged to her on her doorstep (emo!). fuck and ever since that exact moment i decided not to take shit from girls. i didn't need a girlfriend to be happy anymore.

so.

i'm saying. forget about some girl. jesus.

but if you want to sulk, go ahead.

only trying to help.

but if you're going to keep throwing cheap shots at me, then i'll stop trying to help.

make up your mind.

umm...I'm going to try to get this sort of back on topic.

Sometimes, certain songs can "touch me" in a special way. For example, I was listening to SM last weekend, while doing homework. Now, unless you've disappeared off the face of the planet for a few weeks, you should know that I've had a very stressful and hectic few weeks. "Life" started playing. Usually, that song doesn't affect me much, but I listened to the words, and it kind of sent me into some sort of trance. I was almost frozen, it was as if Raine was singing directly to me. "Life is waiting for you, it's all messed up but we'll survive." It almost brought a tear to my eye.

And then, today, as I was walking home from class, very distraught about my horrible day, the lyrics to "Not Enough" popped up in my head. "And when they say you're not that strong, you're not that weak, it's not your fault." I wanted to cry and scream that verse at the top of my lungs at the same time. It was very strange.

I love it when a song can do that to me. An OLP song hasn't done that in quite a while.
HARDCORE!!!

OMG. I can't believe I din't think fo you
until now because when I think on
a scale of one to ten you're like YWELVE.
No, seriously?

I <3 my HLP!!!!!

Sorry whenyoukissedme, I don't see what you're doing as helping. But I am gonna stop being a dumbass and let it go. Sorry. Odds are this post will be deleted, like some of my other ones that mysteriously disappear.
