I've been a Wings fan since I was introduced to hockey 5 1/2 - 6 years ago.

Ha! I've been a Sabres fan for 11 years now. When I was 5, I could name all the players on the team, and their numbers. I loved it. My favorite player was Christian Ruutuu.

Arena football team owner submits bid for Buffalo Sabres
By JOHN WAWROW
AP Sports Writer
September 19, 2002

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- The owner of the Arena Football League's Buffalo Destroyers met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday to formally submit a bid to buy the financially troubled Buffalo Sabres.

Mark Hamister's meeting with Bettman could stretch into Friday possibly, said spokesman Earl Wells.

``It's been pretty complex but it's moving forward,'' Wells said.

Wells said it was his understanding that a bid was being submitted.

The NHL did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Besides owning the Destroyers, Hamister is chairman of the Buffalo-based National Health Care.

The bid is just the first step in what is still likely to be a long process. Besides requiring league approval, the sale of the team could land in bankruptcy court.

The NHL, which said it is committed to keeping the team in Buffalo, took control of the Sabres in June as a result of team owner John Rigas' financial troubles. Rigas, accused of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the Adelphia cable television company that he founded, remains the Sabres' owner in name only.

Adelphia, the nation's sixth-largest cable TV company, filed for bankruptcy in June.

Earlier this month, Erie County Executive Joel Giambra told The Associated Press that bankruptcy might be inevitable in order for the Sabres to settle their $157 million debt to Adelphia. Bettman said it was inappropriate to talk about bankruptcy.

As it stands, the Sabres' debt is more than the franchise's expected sale price -- projected to be between $85 million and $100 million.

As many as five prospective ownership groups have expressed interest in the franchise, including one headed up by the partnership of Sherry Bassin, owner of the Ontario Hockey League Erie Otters, Alan Maislin, whose family operates a major trucking firm near Montreal, and Frank DuRoss, who owns the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

Rochester billionaire and New York gubernatorial candidate B. Thomas Golisano has also expressed interest in the Sabres.

Oh man. I have no clue what's going on. I just want someone to buy them and have the whole thing over with. This sucks.

But, on a happier note, there is a preseason game tomorrow, my friends. Gahahaha. I can't wait. I could be going to a game on Saturday, but I have a stupid volleyball tournament. Dammit. But I am going to one next Friday. Yip-i-dee-doo!!

EDMONTON (CP) - The NHL is evaluating a proposal that could see the battle of Alberta move outdoors to Commonwealth Stadium in 2004.
Frank Brown, a spokesman for the league, confirmed Friday that they are considering the idea of having the Edmonton Oilers play the Calgary Flames in the 60,000-seat football stadium, but it would be premature to suggest the game is a lock.
"There's no possible way that we are in anything more than an evaluation process right now," Brown said.
"There are a lot of things to be considered."
Edmonton Mayor Bill Smith said the proposal has received tentative approval from both the league and the players' association and the city is now in the process of working out a lease with the Oilers.
