Why OLP is the best...

Post by pjfan20 »

this is my first post here. I've only recently decided to venture out to these boards to share my obsession with this band. ya know, I've been just reading a lot here, and a lot of shit has been pissing me off, especially people saying shit about gravity and how it's "too pop" or "too TRL." I've seen this happen with other bands, as soon as they gain some commercial success, fans get hostile and it's bullshit. I know it sucks to go to a show and see a kid there who you know is only there because his favorite pop station is spinning SOT. but who cares, maybe this show will inspire him to go buy all of OLP's albums and they will fuckin change his life the way they changed mine. you, as fans, should want that to happen. why should OLP not be able to gain new fans? I want to hear some logiocal explanation to that. Everyone has been saying how Gravity is no Spiritual Machines. No shit it isnt, we already have one Spiritual machines, we dont need another. go listen to Creed if you want 50 songs that all sound the fuckin same. It's just bullshit that people calling themselves fans say shit like that. No one cares if you have been a fan since naveed...wow that means dick to me. because of that we all owe you something? fuck that. the only shit that matters to me is that 30 seconds when I walk from any situation to my car and I know that when I turn that key I get to hear "if you believe" or "stealing babies" or any other song and I know I can totally forget my problems. All the MTV and all the message boards are meaningless, what matters is the music, dont lose sight of that. Too many people are judging and that's not cool. Who cares about someone wanting to talk about Raine's hair? fuck off, what's more arbitrary, his hair or you discussing the overall theme of superman's dead for the 156th fuckin time? who fuckin cares, we all here for one reason, we love the music, and I hope that the TRL shit and all that does gain some new fans, because I know that someone else will discover this wonderful band and the amazing music that they make...that's what we as fans should strive for. if you think otherwise you obviously havent gotten the messages in Raine's lyrics. Whew. now that I am done venting, im gonna go, I'll talk to ya later.

First thing dont listen to critics saying there pop cuz they are absolute dickheads.

And just listen to gravity, do you think All for you, not enough are poppy. Pop music doesnt use hard core gautaring and shit. Olp is rock and one of the best bands out there. Personally i think gravity is there second best album, second to Naveed, and to the people who say gravity is poppy i just laugh, how can there like most rock cd be poppy when SM is like :freak: . I like were the guys are heading, if they can mix in some old olp flare then they will deffintly pwn everything out there.

the saying "pop music" changes all the time... When I think of "Pop" i think of bands like Nsync, BSB, or Britney... lately since those bands havint been making any noise since none of came out with albums of late really they must find a new "pop". so they look towards mainstream Rock music... are OLP mainstream? in Canada yes, but I really doubt that in the states, at least in most places. Just wait till actual "Pop" music comes back when the boy bands all come out with their albums again and you'll see that they'll stop refering to a lot of the supposed "pop-rock" music as pop...

good on ya for speaking your mind though. If your ever looking for a good place to rant the CM is the place to be.

some people enjoy hopping on the bashing bandwagon (i.e. Gravity, Creed, tree huggers, etc...)

my advice: worry about the music and enjoy

I think that everyone here is a huge fan of OLP. period. If they're bashing the band they obviously aren't fans of them. Mind you everyone can have their opinion of albums, lyrics, rifts, whatever, and as long as they can justify their opinions than let them be, if they think that nothing is going to alter their opinion, as long as it's educated and valid.

Saying it's not as good as their previous albums is understandable. We're allowed to feel that Gravity isn't as brilliant as previous albums by Our Lady Peace. And Gravity sounds like every other rock band out there right now, so.. it lacks something that other OLP albums had.

It's excellent, though, really well done. It just doesn't touch me as much, and that's what's important.

I love Gravity. A LOT. There's not one song on there that I dislike (I skip over SwOT so I don't wear it out).

But it isn't the same as Spiritual Machines or Happiness.

But that's just repeating the obvious.

maybe people are saying gravity is shit because it is shit. The moment I heard sot (long before it was hugely successful) I knew olp had lost something.

The main difference to me, is that Gravity is the first album that doesn't inspire me as a musician to write music. It's not a bad thing for the general public, but it kinda makes me sad. Don't get me wrong though, I still love the album. And to me, "pop" is the stuff thats way overplayed on rock radio, Creed, Nickelback, Linkin Park. You all have to admit that Gravity is definite step in that direction with its power chord driven rock formula. Not that its a bad thing, its just a "thing"

Just because you're a fan of a band it doesn't mean that you have to automatically like everything that they produce. Why should I say that I love "Gravity" because it's by OLP? Surely you should appreciate an album for the music rather than the band.

Yeah, that's true, good point.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

i think gravity is definitely not the greatest album, its still good but a lot of fans are getting mad because its not as good as olp is capable of. Regardless of whether it is more "pop" than olp used to be or not, it doesnt sound as good. Its ok that they tried something new but what bothers me is that they are sticking with bob rock. It seems to me that they may be aware that the music is not as good but they are looking for more fans.

and that can be called "selling out". its good if they make some true fans, but they are letting down a lot of loyal ones that they have

Few things. First off, Creed, Nickelback, and Linkin Park are definately NOT "pop". Pop music is stuff like Britney Spears, BSB, Nsync. Basically any band or group, I should say, that doesn't play their own music. Have you ever seen any of the BSB anywhere within 10 feet of anything considered musical? I don't think so. I don't understand why Creed takes so much slack on this board. They are probably one of the most influential bands I've ever known, and are also my favourite band tied with OLP. The only reason a lot of their songs sound the same is because they are successful with the music they have and want to keep making it. Which brings me to my next point. Although Gravity is different from all their other albums, I still really like it. I think they wanted a musicaly change and aren't simply looking for more fans, although that's what would appear is happening. But at any rate, it's not pop.
Some of you probably think I left. But was I ever here to start?
