Made of Steel meaning

Post by yourbuddypal »

SO i was listening to gravity the other day(like everyday), and popped on made of steel. About mid-song, i had a revelation about the meaning. Is it just me, or is it about a friend who tried to commit suicide? "THEY FOUND THE NOTE DOWN IN YOUR CAR, and Its not your fault it gets this hard, hold youre head high, dont look down, im by your side, wont back down. You wanted a hero tonight, well im not made of steel, im not made of steel, BUT YOUR SECRETS SAFE WITH ME....some sympathy, THAT REMINDS YOU NOT TO BLEED...you crawled up here to fall apart..." And i personally think all the "i can be anything..." stuff is support to help this person who obviously has mental anguish...Yeah...my thoughts at least. I wanna hear other opinions.

Our lady peace rocks the casbah.
Whats a signature?

It all seems so contaigious, not to be yourself and faceless in a song that has no soul.

And maybe you just need, a friend, as clumsy as youve been...

"You've got to keep it pure. You enter as a musician and if you're not careful, you end up as an entertainer." -Raine Maida

Yeah, suicide would have to be my guess.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

I agree totally .. I think it's definitely about suicide .. I didn't hear it was about Raine's little brother though .. don't you remember when Ken was here he said that song was written about him, along with parts of Innocent being written about him and his girlfriend :freak:

i think the suicide inference is pretty good, but it doesn't necessarily have to be about someone trying to kill themselves. it could be about having a friend that's extremely depressed and you have to help them to see that their life is not a shit sandwich.

heh that made me think of a line from she's come undone by wally lamb...."i saw a bumper sticker on this one guys car that said 'life's a shit sandwich' so i took my pen and wrote next to it, 'only if you're a shithead'"

Ken was this guy who said he was Raine's cousin or something...no one believed him and he disappeared.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

i agree with the suicide idea....that is what i thought from the first time i heard it.
Is there something good, something more?
Is there anything worth dying for?

I am confused here. the song was written about Ken and Innocent was aobut Ken and his girlfriend. Oh please. You know I emailed that guy and never got an answer back.

For the record my friend and I thought the Suicide reference also. I thought that the person being sung too was deep in depression and wanted to die or couldn't find away out and the person singing it saved them. That is just my interp.

another thing about good old KEN there. I am probably better friends with Raine then he was and I don't consider myself a friend. More of an aquaintance I guess.

He was so full of bull.

He said that Raine's favourite Gravity songs were All For You and Made of Steel. Raine even said that his favourite was Innocent...

hehe...Ken. I remember him and his infamous letters to and from Raine. They were such good friends that most of the lyrics on Gravity pertain to Ken in some way, their powerful bonding friendship, and Ken's imaginary girlfriend. We tore him up like Scott bathroom tissue....whahaha

It's so easy to make up shit about yourself on the internet that I'm skeptical when people claim to be this or that.
