I love Curve, but I'm starting to think OLP has a knack for cutting out excellent excellent songs.. First Right Stuff now this.. Could totally have seen this as a single...

YES... This was screaming to be a single and one of the best songs OLP has ever released IMO..

B-sides anytime soon??

I don't think that this song would have been a successful single, nor a single at all, really. Based on what we can hear, it had good verses, but the chorus wasn't impactful enough. It would have needed a lot more in that department.

I dunno, I really liked the chorus. The contrast between the verses and the chorus works really well in my opinion..

That chorus was the first time OLP has sounded like OLP to me since A/L/S.

Do you think OLP's next album is going to stay as exploratory and diverse as curve, or do think they are going to kind of refine their sound and land it in a "genre". I was really wondering... curve really has no two songs that really sound the same. But then I thought about As Fast as You Can, which to me does sound reminiscent of Fight The Good Fight. It made me wonder if they were going to steer their music in that direction, or if the next album is going to be all over the place like this one.

Clearly, only time (approximately 3-5 years) will tell.

I think those two songs were recorded around the same time and probably influenced each other -- I don't think it's a sign. My guess is they'll continue playing in different directions.

That's interesting you say that. I wonder how the song writing for curve looks on a timeline. Wolf was around for a quite a while before the album, but we don't know exactly when it become FITHH. Mettle I know was the last track they finished, and it sounded like at the time of its production, the band was unsure that it was going to work or maybe they just didn't know if they were going to use it (a lot of interviews talked about the cd being 9-10 tracks long, and there were a few that mentioned towards the end of the recording phase that they were working on the final song... which i think pretty much confirms this). As far as the rest of the material, I wonder how much of it was leftovers from the pre-Lader album that had been expanded upon, and what was written after Lader came into the picture.

And Trusty... The alcoholics always say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

The Wolf changed around Feb. 16 according to Steve's Twitter.

Mettle was the final track mixed. It was recorded in December, around the same time they were trying to tie up Window Seats. Here's what he said about Mettle (December 4)

I believe Allowance, and Find Our Way were among the last songs recorded, looking at some of Steve's comments. I would have to compare with Raine's, but it's a bit harder to research since he's more active than Steve.

Interesting... maybe i'm remembering wrong, but doesn't Mettle have piano in it?

Also, i remember there were various comments by raine about songs that were entirely falsetto... Rabbits, grocery list.... think there was one more. Shame that the songs were either cut, or that the idea just didn't work out well. As much as I love this album, if raine would have played in his higher range a little more i'd have given it that fifth star.

Seems like a lot of this album really came together in the final few days. Sounds almost like the final product is still extremely different than what the final album was going to be just a month before they sealed the envelope.

That's what Duncan told me in London. There were a lot of last minute things that were done to pull the album together. But, I think the changes made a great dynamic for listening to the album front to back. If you're a listener who would rather pick out your own playlist, the cut songs would make sense.

I think most of Mettle is 2 guitar tracks + bass. There's a 3rd guitar with more effects that comes in as the song progresses. Some overdubs -- guitar, synth, hard to tell, but no piano. If you listen close you can hear fingers sliding between frets on both the main guitar tracks. The guitar on the left channel has a tone that seems to be frequently mistaken for keys.

It would have been a great single I think. It has a very thoughtful element and abode feeling too it-- It has a heart and soul. I listen to it for hours and just get lost. It sounds so different from the other crap being played on the radio which I think would have really gave it an advantage. Raine also sounds so convinced singing it and the falsetto is great in the chorus. It was a huge mistake leaving this off of the CD in my opinion. I hope one day it sees the light of day because it's awaiting some serious praise.
and if i don't make it know that i've loved you all along.

No. Nothing really new lately. I have not heard anything except info on some Canadian/European tour dates. Nothing on B-Sides, nothing on future releases other than a few posts by Trusty that neither confirm or deny anything. Unfortunately, we're back into that lull where we just have to wait for the band to do something new.

In the meantime, i've gone back to listen to studio clips leading up to Curve. A lot of the things I was most excited for didn't actually make the album. Really hope there will be a B-Sides or that the band will pull together and do a second album soon here (yeah fucking right).

Interesting. Raine says in an interview with WGRD that he doesn't think the unreleased tracks will show up anywhere: http://wgrd.com/wingstock-artist-our-la ... vity-more/

Not really surprised. When the guys release an album... they seem to think that its this definitive piece of work, and anything that didn't make it shouldn't be heard because, if it was meant to, it would have made the album. The album was not long... 10 tracks. If they wanted us to hear these tracks, curve would have probably been closer to 13 tracks.

Didn't the guys say they wanted to get some unreleased tracks into our hands (at least from Curve?). Not surprised if it's not happening.

I thought they (Raine, at least) have been saying since before the album came out that there's not much in terms of finished, leftover tracks from Curve that could possibly be released.
