I really really hope warnings makes the album, in some way if not the album on a deluxe copy, I love that demo

I'd rather have 9 great tracks + 2 or 3 ok/medium tracks than only the 9. The reason I say this is because OLP tends to never play or release their non-CD songs unlike most other bands. So if they don't put it out then we never get good copies.

I'm not a fan of the current trend of CDs being 9-10 3.5-minute tracks.

the 10 song/40 minute deal is not actually a current trend - it is more of a throwback to the good old days of LPs :)

Somebody has to bring excitement to the fanpage. And its ok!! High fives and hand jobs are not necessary. That amazing smile will do!!

Pretty sure everyone could do with out that type of excitement - thanks for playing though :)

to this day I will always wonder why Shaking was on Clumsy but Trapeze was not. Much like Vampires being dropped from HIPT.

I can accept 9 songs on the album if they release some of the others online or through whatever method they feel. It's hard hearing about the band liking some of the songs they've done only to never hear of them ever again (Comes and Goes coming to mind). It's a shame.

Boy, if I didn't know that was Duncan there I would've assumed, I dunno, the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand maybe?

I'm assuming that's mostly due to the size of the image.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.
Waiting for something else,

I guess it is, in the same way that trading in cards for horses would be a throwback to the good old days of the 19th century. Music has evolved as the medium has. Bands are no longer limited by record length or speed, and they've expanded the amount of music expected as a standard. I think it's hard to argue that Naveed would have been better as a 3.5 minute song, or that Spiritual Machines would have been stronger by removing a few songs like In Repair or If You Believe.

Better to include more solid songs than to cherry pick and leave people disappointed in the length and quantity. It's not all about quality, as then we'd be fine with paying $20 for 1 song as the standard.

And it wouldn't be as big of a deal if OLP would just drop their weird act and release unreleased tracks.

FEBRUARY 11, 2012
Interview with Steve Mazur of Our Lady Peace

1. What have been some of the highlights in 2012 so far?

I’m dorky with most things I say. Let’s see, playing our New Year’s Eve show was, but that was in 2011. So, just hearing our record coming together, even though we’re still working on it, but I’m excited about hearing it and songs being finished. There’s nothing more exciting in the world to me.

2. What’s been your favorite tour ever to go on?

The last one we did, and I’m not just saying it because it was [laugh]. We played two full albums, that was my favorite. The shows were demanding, we would come out and play Clumsy and Spiritual Machines, break, then come out and do regular Our Lady Peace set, then do one album one night and another the next, so we experienced city tours and experience of almost like being in a play. It was a cool experience with a cool crew, and it was a challenge to pull off albums every night with each new show. The variety was great though.

3. What’s the craziest fan experience ever?

Tough one, boy that’s a tough one. There’s been some crazy ones. Sometimes, people show us tattoos, lyrics or album cover or our bands name. It’s crazy in a good way, to see someone is able to mark themselves with our bands. Takes me back. But a crazy fan story, and I don’t want say anything negative, but just seeing how our fans are so dedicated. Our fans would wait in cold Canadian temperatures, we’d play for hours and come out with someone still waiting there to talk and hang out with us. That’s pretty crazy, in a good way.

4. Who’s your favorite band you’ve ever toured with?

The Trailer Park Boys, we brought them on a tour to entertain the audience and we shared a bus. They’re quite the characters, one guy was trying to bring shopping carts on bus. You’d see them all over. If he saw one he didn’t have he’d want it, he collected them. One time we had to say “Dude you can’t bring shopping carts on the bus.”

5. What pranks have been played while on tour?

We’ve played some pranks on other bands, but the best was on a band called Never Ending White Lights. On the tour, every night Raine [Maida] would go out and sing on one of their songs he helped record; the lights would dim and he’d go on stage and sing with them. So, on the last night, they go out and play, and the lights go down and instead of Raine it was drummer Jeremy dressed up as a werewolf. The lights turn on and he has the mic and he starts howling in it. Pretty much one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

6. I’m sure you get this question a lot, but how do you feel about the music industry switching to a more digital, online process? So many people being able to just download music for free, how does that affect the band?

It’s a natural progression, I feel like it sounds old fashioned if you say you think somethings better other way. Personally, I still go the store and buy CD’s. I love going up to CD shelve, putting one on, and flipping through the artwork. I love that shit. I never feel that same coziness through a list of texts that say what the song is, it bums me out. It’s not artistic, but maybe that’s just my age, kids these days never had the experience.

7. You joined the band in 2002, how do you think or feel like things have changed throughout till now?

It’s changed a lot, I mean I was pretty green personally, and I hadn’t really been in touring bands or made records. I had bands when I was younger and I went to a music college. It took a while to learn my role in band and what I needed to do for the band to be where it wanted to be. I hadn’t been through it like them [in 1994]. I grew a lot, it’s been about 10 years now. One thing that has changed is that, as far as writing music, things are much more smooth and enjoyable, we sort of learned to work with each other, and for most part have it down. We communicate; it’s very smooth and flows freely. Pretty much everyone has their own say, and we feel comfortable. It took a while.

8. What’s it like working with your band mates?

We work pretty well together, we work in a somewhat nontraditional sense, and it has to do with the split up; Raine and me moved to L.A, Duncan and Jeremy live in Toronto. By nature, we don’t get to hang out and jam a whole lot when we feel like it, and writing deals with sending stuff online, we trade ideas and work them out at studios. I go to Toronto sometimes to write and jam. When we work like that its unique, I might work up idea in my studio, but never stays that way without a record, everyone mixes it up, rather than everyone in a room changing it. It’s fun to get an idea as far as you can take it, then hand it off to everybody, it only makes it better. Then as far as a studio, we have a really good way of working with each other. Being in a band is tough, there’s a lot of dynamics. Not having a mutual respect will cause bands to fall apart. We all get a shout out of ideas. We all dig into each other things, we want to make the best music while were on this planet.

9. So far five tracks are confirmed, how many in all will there be.

There’s nine right now, but we might add another.

10. What’s the writing process like?

We pick song, demanding and writing, and at a certain point one or two stick out and sort of seem sonic and it’s the direction of album. Every record you want to hope has a continuation, a vibe and style. It sets the tone of a record; everything else has to compliment that. Every record has great songs that don’t make it, that doesn’t compliment or sounds too much like another song. We believe that records are a piece of work as a whole, not just a collection of songs. Songs don’t make it; you’re bummed about it, but it’s not just about individual songs.

11. Raine Maida said that people are going to be surprised by Curve, can you explain?

I mean, it seemed to us every time we do one its different. I would hope this record is very different, its interesting. Some stuff peers gave said “Wow this is really different for you guys.” It kind of surprised me. Sometimes people don’t think it’s different. We’re going for a lot of things on this album. Our friend Jason, [also] our producer is an interesting musical guy. He pushed us, there were times he wouldn’t let us have same sound as we usually do. That’s kind of why we hired him, and the ending result there were fundamental results. Jason’s the kind of guy that doesn’t care about getting a song on the radio; it’s cool, but he was interesting in moving things. He’d be the first guy to give opinion, telling us to make it weirder, so that’s made it the kind of different that people may be surprised with.

12. A song was released called Heavyweight, was the reception as well as you planned?

I’m really stoked, it’s a great song and it got some real honest, genuine, positive response. People who have liked Our Lady Peace for a long time were calling up “We heard it, it sounds like Our Lad y Peace, but this one is really, really great, we’re really excited.” It’s been quite satisfying, and radio stations want to play it.

13. What do you plan to do after the CD’s released and when the tours done?

Really, we had a great time making it, and working with an outside producer we really enjoyed working with him and the process, so we want to make another record with same producer pretty quickly.

14. Anything else you’d like to say?

Give us a shot; we made a really good record. If you write us off, give us a shot, we poured some blood sweat and tears in it.

[There comes a time when you get to interview your favorite band, even if by phone. A special thank you to Steve Mazur, a member of a band that really helped me through a rough patch in my life.]
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

I cant say enough how positive the bold text sounds. So refreshing to have OLP working with someone who doesn't give a damn about radio play - where was he a decade ago?! This album I have such a good feeling about. It's almost like they're ready to put out a rock record again - exciting times.

He's been around OLP for a while now - worked on Pedestrian's first EP, HIPT, and Raine's first EP.

I wonder how much the guitar solo from the If This Is It demo has changed.

Yeah things are definitely really slow around here... I could go for a new clip or an interview or a OLP.com site update or ANYTHING...
