i hear you calling reminds me of something that'd be found on HIPT.. don't know if that's good or bad.
and if i don't make it know that i've loved you all along.

Instrumentally everything I'm hearing sounds fucking awesome, really it does. Different of course for them, but at the same time unique and crafty. The only problem I have had so far with all the clips is Raine's voice, really just sounds boring and lacks that power and emotion. Hopefully I'm wrong when the cd finally hits the shelf, really would like to get blown away by Raine's abilities again.

I don't hear that at all. It has a more atmosphere to it.

And Codes, I'd have to agree, that's the only part I'm slightly worried about, but either way I'm not gonna be too disappointed. The "I Hear You Calling" clip sounds pretty sick in terms of vocals.

It may seem like a minor issue, but one thing I would like to hear in at least a couple songs on the new album is an aggressive, erratic reach into falsetto like was present on the first few albums. IMO, that's what made the choruses of certain songs so memorable (i.e. In Repair, One Man Army, Carnival, Superman's Dead, Annie, and so on). The use of falsetto in the last three albums has been rare to say the least, but it's also been soft and definitely not erratic (i.e. Bring Back the Sun, Paper Moon).

Like I said, it might seem like a small thing, but I believe some of the greatest OLP songs were made greater due to this effect.

I don't know....it still seems like he's got that range during a live show. One can only hope! ;)

HIPT came out 6 years ago. The album consisted of Wipe that Smile. That song had some erratic falsetto. From what I've seen of the new record. I'd say atleast one song is gonna have it.

and we've heard it in some of the solo stuff too. I know it's not OLP but it's recent and it's an example of Raine using it more than he has been in the past few years. I think what we see is him hesitating because he's still not completely comfortable with it or he's picking and choosing carefully like during live performances because forcing something that used to come as second nature to him probably hurts a little. He just needs time to be reacquainted with it and figure out how it works with his less nasal adult voice.
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

That's true...forgot about that song. Probably because I'm not a huge fan of it, but it definitely did have some erratic falsetto. The overall quality of that song pales in comparison to those I mentioned before though. Even erratic falsetto wasn't enough for it to click with me ;)

Yep...too much of a simple song with simple lyrics for my tastes. I'm much more of a fan of complexity, so it's never sat right with me as an OLP song. HIPT was an album full of that problem though, if you ask me...

What's wrong with simplicity? If you ask me, more problems are created when a band writes a complex song for the sake of complexity or showing off virtuosity. If the song conveys the message of the writer, what does it matter if it's as simple as a 12 year old playing guitar in his room or a band like Dream Theater? How is Wipe that Smile Off Your Face any less complicated than some of the older stuff? Say 4 am, Clumsy, Life, In Repair, etc?
Talk, talk is cheap, puts me to sleep.

My list of 'toos':

Too many fedoras.
Too many pairs of tight black jeans.
Too many guys in a room. (Four is enough.)

Wipe that Smile is less complicated than those songs you listed in just about every possible way....lyrically, musically, vocally, and depth-wise.

The problem with simplicity in music is that it runs counter to the creative process. Creativity isn't about staying inside a little box. It's about coming up with something innovative and fresh. OLP has admitted that they were guilty of sacrificing their creativity in order to please the record company during the creation of HIPT. The result? A bunch of simple songs that comprised an album that was far inferior to any of their previous records. Simplicity is great if you want catchy pop music, and there are a lot of people who seem to like that these days. However, the listening public (as well as the OLP fanbase) has spoken, and clearly OLP's attempts to go with a simple, mainstream sound has failed miserably. I would say they've failed because making simple music is not playing to their strengths as artists.

HIPT was a disaster. I like it for what it is, but still.

On their formspring this was asked and answered:

----
I've heard Raine mention that OLP would probably never play 'Where Are You' again. Was this an example of a song compromised during the HIPT sessions? The song seems to have a deep message which is why I'm surprised to hear it met with such disdain.

"Where are you" was a band grasping at straws at the end of recording 40+ songs for HIPT. not our best work! shit happens! - Raine
----

Thought it was kind of funny, especially since Where Are You is one of my least favorite songs.

As for Album 8, I still really wish Raine didn't replace "I gave it my blood but he wants more" with "It's run out of patience, he wants more".

First lyric is so much more powerful.

I'd think it would be pretty cool if after the release of the album, we could get online downloads of demo version of songs.

Not to keep pestering T, but anymore updates you can sneak us? Ha.
