Basically, on this next album, I'm looking for a manic explosion of sound.

Did you just describe Gwen Stefani's musical progression?

I don't think that's quite what he means by tape loops.

Haha. No, not quite.

I would prefer something less straight-ahead. Something that I would never expect from these guys.

So you want the new album to just be four guys in a room WITHOUT ISTRUMENTS? That would be interesting, I think :Johnathan:

They should utilize the principles of musique concrète, samples perhaps, as well as traditional instruments. I happen to be an advocate of having "more" than four guys in a room. If you're in a studio, give us something crazy. They used the Kurzweil K250 keyboard on Spiritual Machines to great effect. I'd like to see a little more of that type of thing if it's still in them.

Well, the album will be 2011 now. Anyways, curious as to how it will sound.

Before the tour started, a few inteviews gave the idea that it was going to be heavier and more energetic than Burn Burn, but would be made in the same way. (This kinda gives a good idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IJeowQnoGk ).

During the tour, Raine started saying how rehearsing and playing Spiritual Machines (and to some extent, Clumsy) was bringing him "back to the great things about the band" and things he did lyrically and vocally he hadn't done in awhile. Plus Steve talked about how the tour added a bunch of new pedals and effects that he likes.

So now I'm wondering if the tour has brought them to an entirely new creative direction, or if Album 8 will be a cross between the styles?

Raine also said something along the lines of "fans who like those albums (Naveed-Spiritual Machines) should look forward to seeing stuff from that era creeping back into our music". Sounds pretty straight-forward to me. I think they're definitely going to wow us with the next album.

"Creeping back in" doesn't neccesarily mean an all-out change though, it could just mean hints of that older music have been worked back in (ie, falsetto here and there). Plus they called Burn Burn a "return to form," which I wouldn't say is accurate at all, as I don't really see anything similar to earlier albums. That said, it still had some really good songs.

I really wish they would go back to their old roots. Don't get me wrong I think BB is a positive in the sense that songs like Monkey Brains/Escape Artists/Paper moon are great and actually give me a sense that the band can still be good and creative, but they need to take from those songs, and expand those into a full cd.

Guitar solos
More more more falsettos, common Raine this is your trade mark, without it the band becomes pretty generic.
deeper lyrics

when your on album 8, take what you have done over the last 7 cds, take out the best elements, and go with that.

I believe, without a doubt, that we'll hear a significantly larger amount of falsetto on this record. At least 4 songs.

Raine during the the HiPT - Burn Burn tour liked to completely ignore some falsetto. But during the Clumsy/SM tour's second set with songs like OMA he included more falsetto than previous years and then he actually added random falsetto to songs like Monkey Brains and Paper Moon.

Then there is the heavy falsetto songs like AYS and Car Crash which probably influenced them just as much.

However small, I think it's a good sign.

So I was making a post, hit submit, and then it told me I wasn't signed in... So I lost it. I'll try to remember what it is I typed though.

Burn Burn saw Duncan playing his best I've heard since Spiritual Machines. I think can safely say, for me at least, that out of the band he delivered the most consistantly on BB. Burn Burn also saw Steve coming out of his shell more than on Healthy (although it was only in 4 or 5 of the BB songs). As I stated before, Steve has added some pedals and effects that he says he's really liking, so my guess is that we can expect to hear him experimenting with some new sounds on Album 8.

Also hoping Jer gets back to his stranger drumming rhythms, as I'm not really feeling his more straightforward style he's had over the past 3 albums (although Refuge and Escape Artist had some great drumming). Then of course, Raine has stated that he's kind of getting back to older writing styles and old vocal things.

With all of this said though, I don't really care if it's back at their roots or not. I don't care what style is. All I care about is that it's something interesting, and that each member provides something memorable.

I just went to check out a recent interview transcript with Raine to look over something, but the Montreal Gazette has taken it down... thankfully I was able to get it through Google cache.

This quote from Raine makes me very optimistic about the record, with the key parts bolded:

Gazette: I read an interview with Duncan not so long ago where it sounded like you were already working on a new album along the same lines as Burn Burn.

Maida: We definitely are – we’ve already started writing. But playing Spiritual and really having to analyze those songs again, even me going back to a lot of those lyrics – playing the hits is one thing, but playing some of the deeper tracks, it’s really brought me back to the great things about this band. So I think our fans – especially for people of that ilk, who like those records – I think they’re going to find a lot of that stuff creeping its way back into our music. Because we have complete control again, and now we’re able to basically do what we want. So even conceptually, what we’re talking about for the next record, in terms of the way it’s going to be recorded and how we’re going to it, it’s definitely the same way as Burn Burn – we’re just going to do it on our own. But I think we’re going to have a little bit more fun even than what we did with Burn Burn and really push the boundaries again.

I think what Raine was trying to say here is that the recording process is going to be similar to Burn Burn, but the product itself will be different and will "push the boundaries" yet again. I think he realizes that most songs on Burn Burn were pretty "safe" and "radio-friendly", and going back to SM and Clumsy made him realize the great things about OLP again.

I have no doubt it'll be a different product, as no two albums have been the same. I'm just curious as to see how big of an influence those records (mainly SM, as Raine didn't sound as enthusiastic about Clumsy) will have on this album. I mean, SM even plays into their philosophy for how they want their records to be: live. I was listening to SM with a pair of headphones cranked up, and realized how basic the production is for something that borders on art rock a good portion of the time. For the most part it's just drums, bass, vocals, synths (whatever the Kurzweil keyboard they used was called), and usually two takes of guitar (at least it was for what sounds layered on If You Believe).

I made my initial post in hopes of getting some activity in here, but as the posts go on I'm getting more excited to hear it. Really hope once they get together, Trusty can hook us up with some vids, even if it's something low quality in the background while the band does whatever.

Last I read, they were to write this summer and record in the fall with the album in the new year. So I'm guessing we'd get a single November-ish? Although the band usually follows through on time, so of course all of this is in the air.

Raine said the same exact thing about Burn Burn.....And in June we finally got something. So i'm guessing Spring-Summer 2011 for a single and hopefully an album.
