The Ultimate OLP Fan Conversion Album

Post by Corey »

So I have a buddy who has pretty similar music tastes to me but doesn't understand my OLP obsession. I told him I'd make him a custom album with my favorite picks that would guarantee to convert him. I decided to take 2-3 songs per album. I left out ballads/slower songs even though many are my favorites (4am, Thief, etc.) so that it would be a high energy album (we are runners and they make for good workout music). I also left out many of their famous singles (Clumsy *gasp*, Life, Somewhere Out There, etc) because he is already not a fan, has probably heard these ones, and I don't feel they would help in converting him. Lastly, I crammed as much as possible on one CD (using 79:55 out of a possible 80 min). This is what I came up with:

1. Starseed
2. Naveed
3. Julia
4. Superman's Dead
5. Shaking
6. The Story of 100 Aisles
7. One Man Army
8. Is Anybody Home?
9. Stealing Babies
10. In Repair
11. Right Behind You
12. All For You
13. Sorry
14. Not Enough
15. Love and Trust
16. Where Are You
17. Monkey Brains
18. All You Did Was Save My Life
19. Our Time Is Fading (live)
20. Whatever (live)

I was really torn between Starseed/Birdman and I don't want to drop Julia from the Naveed album. The rest of the albums I'm pretty happy with. I did consider getting Right Stuff on there. The songs I went with ultimately fit the best and gave me 20 whole songs, a nice even number.

How do you feel about my list? What would you do different?

Blister is like one of my all time favorite songs, but I didn't feel it fit my criteria. Hope, Happiness, and Are You Sad are all great tunes as well.

If it were the songs I wanted to impress a music nerd with and I had to pick three from each album, I'd try for... hmm.

1. Naveed (of course)
2. Neon Crossing
3. The Birdman
4. Carnival
5. Clumsy
6. 4am/Car Crash
7. One Man Army
8. Potato Girl
9. Stealing Babies
10. All My Friends
11. The Wonderful Future
12. Are You Sad?
13. All For You
14. Bring Back The Sun
15. Not Enough
16. Angels/Losing/Sleep
17. Love and Trust
18. Wipe That Smile Off Your Face
19. Monkey Brains
20. Escape Artist
21. Paper Moon.

Or something like that.

Great song but doesn't have the energy I'm looking for. Perhaps I'll make two albums: the one listed above and a second great song album to follow up once I peak his interest.

You're saying Car Crash doesn't have any energy? :wtf:

For me it's one of the most energetic of their songs... the beauty of it is that the energy is almost "tamed" or not allowed to escape through the song... up until the closing falsetto lick. Every second of the song you feel like Raine's gonna go crazy or somethin's gonna happen.

And the bass and percussion in that song (when you crank it wide) is just not comparable to any other song I've ever heard. It fits together with the vocals too perfectly. And I used to hate that song, up until I cranked it on a stereo with good bass.

Different kind of energy. Try going for a 10 mile run. That song isn't going to get you moving faster. It also isn't the kind of song that is going to turn a non-fan around... in my opinion (you said yourself you didn't like it at first). Don't get me wrong. It is one of OLP's best songs for sure; just not right for the album I'm creating.

Car Crash is one of the songs that made me realize I was going to be an OLP fan.

Pretty much, choose the most catchy-yet-creative songs.

You definitely need Potato Girl and Denied on that list somewhere.
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

I still can't get over how nobody else is noticing how unnaturally slow TEIWWB is. When I'm singing along, I have to force myself to sing slower to accomodate the actual pacing. It's weird.

Meh, I've had enough of The End once the chorus starts. Before that it's good though.

Yeah, I don't care for it, even if the pacing were right. It, Dreamland, and White Flags for me are the most irritating elements of the album. Contrasted greatly by amazing work in Paper Moon and Escape Artist.

Dreamland and White Flags are good song...i tell this because i don't hear the live version that reserve us bad surprises....in Dreamland i love the guitar that in some parts reminds me the times of Happiness.... White Flags is a good song not amazing but however a good song....Escape Artist, Paper Moon, Monkey Brains and Refuge are amazing....

it is all subjective.. I made two olp mixed cd's for myself.

I would try to take the best of each CD.. YOu can hold 17-20 songs the most.. The songs that showcased what was great about that particular cd.. Sure some songs need to be on there. Naveed, Superman's Dead..but I would stay away from only what were singles and go with deeper cuts.

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

The fact that I dislike White Flags has nothing to do with the live version. I just feel that they overthought the production of it and tried to do too much with the guitar and the sound of the vocals. It's meant to be simpler.
