Bigger Hit - Superman's Dead or Clumsy?

Post by Driven »

Which would you consider the bigger hit and why? Clumsy got more airplay, but when I first got into OLP I always considered Superman's Dead their signature hit and their fan favorite.

Clumsy gained more success... But Superman's Dead is usually looked at as the band's signature sound, and is a defining song of the 90s for many people.

That's tough. Clumsy was the first track that really opened them up to mainstream radio audience. That said, SD was a massive hit too... I think it spent something stupid like 5 weeks at #1 on the Muchmusic Countdown (which was unheard of at the time).

This is a total cop-out but there really should be a 'both' option for this one! those two tracks were the biggest hits for the band in Canada (I"m thinking SOT probably was comparable in the states)

Somewhere Out There is in a league of it's own in the States. Clumsy got okay airplay and Superman's Dead not as much, but Somewhere Out There was close to a top 40 overall hit. Clumsy just hit #5 on the modern rock charts.

Somewhere Out There:

U.S. Billboard Hot 100 - #44
U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks - #7
U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks - #26
U.S. Billboard Adult Top 40 - #12
U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream - #19
U.S. Billboard Top 40 Tracks - #23
U.S. Billboard Top 40 Adult Recurrents - #10

Clumsy:

Modern Rock Tracks - #5
Mainstream Rock Tracks - #13

Superman's Dead:

Modern Rock Tracks - #11
Mainstream Rock Tracks - #14

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countdown_ ... _TV_series)

It was 3 weeks at #1, which is still ridiculous. Looking at that article, it's one of only 12 songs in history to last 3 weeks or longer at #1. The other songs are some of the biggest hits of the last 20 years, and only one other Canadian entry (Nickelback for "How You Remind Me") is on there.

So yeah, "Superman's Dead" was definitely huge. I'd tend to say that "Clumsy" is the more recognizable, iconic hit at this point though. Either way, it's quite close.

Yeah, that's what I thought too (but I never lived in the States so I didn't want to state that as fact).

It's funny.. OLP is still one of the bigger Canadian bands in terms of sales and popularity within Canada (I'd argue that Nickelback and Billy Talent are the only two that are doing better).. but it still pales to how big this band was during the Clumsy era. They were the only second Canadian band (other than the Hip) to have a diamond record. They had four massive radio hits. Hell, I remember them being on that Much Combat Zone show and beating the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync without any trouble. They really were the 'it' band of the late 90's.

I know they veered a bit from the mainstream with Happiness.... (Although One Man Army and IAH were huge hits in Canada too) and Spiritual Machines... but its still sad that they didn't recieve the same recognition for those two records.

Correction... BNL, not the Hip.

This makes me sad.

EDIT: looked it up on Wiki, and both the Hip (who had two) and the BNL had diamond albums.

Ahh, I stand corrected. The list has been updated since I last checked a couple of years ago.

Clumsy pretty much defines OLP in my mind. Helps that it was my exposure to them, of course.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.
Waiting for something else,

However, if you don't count bands, there are a number of Canadian artists who have hit diamond, both in the States and Canada. Alanis Morissette's album, "Jagged Little Pill" has sold 33 million units world wide. THIRTY THREE MILLION.

Superman's Dead is what turned me on to OLP. I was a fan ever since that song. Clumsy got some airplay but not like Superman's Dead. They still play Superman's Dead on the radio today... Clumsy not so much.

.... why is Under Zenith on this poll?

Disagree. Clumsy is still played more in Rochester. The Zone and the Drive are the only ones that play OLP really, maybe 90.5, but they all play Clumsy more than Superman's Dead. The Drive never plays Superman's Dead.

And Clumsy got more airplay back in the day.

.... why is Under Zenith on this poll?

Just a joke.

Hmm... you think so? I listen to the Zone. The only time I hear something other than AYD at this point is when they have an OLP four play. I did hear Starseed not too long ago.

I think Clumsy. I was playing Clumsy and my gf said she had heard it. Not Superman though.
