Burn Burn vs. Hunters Lullaby

Post by NCdudeN2K4 »

Two latest releases. Two very different releases. One more experimental, the other more pop/mainstream. Which do you enjoy more?

Hunters Lullaby, by far. That album is great, and I'm looking forward to Raine's new stuff, whenever it may come.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

Kind of unfare to compare them. Hunters isn't an OLP release, and was never created with that format in mind.

The Hunter's Lullaby, by far. A nice cohesive, experimental record with the right pop hooks. Maida not only sings (or... uh, spoken-words) with more passion than he has done on the past two OLP albums, but the clever ways he uses his words also puts it ahead of Burn Burn.

The Hunter's Lullaby is my favorite album ever. Burn burn is far from that.

Lullaby=5/5

Burn=2.5/5

As someone who's not much of a fan of that type of music... Hunter's Lullaby still trumps Burn Burn in my books

Refuge still beats a few songs on Lullaby. Currently my fav OLP song.

Refuge is weak. It's got decent build but never gets there. It's repetitive. It's just such a standard song. Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. Too bland.

but i can have an opinion and it's the only song on the record that gives me chills of a 4am or thief theme/sound again

Yes Hunter Lullaby by a mile.

It's what we would expect in a sequence of Naveed, Clumsy, Happiness, Life
Edgy, upbeat, catchy, insightful, intelligent.
Lots of lyrics you really have to look into to find a meaning.

And because Raine in the past has said things in the nature of ...
'I don't tell people the meaning of X song because I want people to find their own meaning'

... that just added to the mystique of it all.

Burn Burn has been very Gravity'esq with slow pineing love songs. I'm sad to say I have had to skip tracks to avoid falling asleep.

Sans Monkey Brains there isn't anything Naveed'esq about the album. HIPT wasn't Naveed'esq either but at least it had some energy behind it.

With HL as stripped down as it is musically, pound for pound it has more megajoules of energy than Burn Burn.

Definitely Hunters Lullaby. It's the most creative piece of work that Raine has been involved with since Spiritual Machines. The lyrics were witty, the beats were catchy, and I really liked him experimenting with all sorts of instruments on that record. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing his future solo albums.
And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignore because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out
What's wrong

Hunter's Lullaby is definately more experimental.

I feel like OLP's music has become SO GENERIC....The thing that made 90's and early 00's OLP so good is that they balanced being experimental while also being catchy......Past 3 albums they've lost that creative flair that made them unique and different in the first place..

Not to say Burn Burn is bad. It just doesn't have anything that really sets it apart from other rock music.

OLP is a competent band now..they made catchy music. They're professional..they work hard on their music. But where's the fire?

Man, why haven't I bought Hunters Lullaby yet?
This seems to be a grave oversight on my part.

I think our opinion of HIPT is the minority -- no clue why though! Was just listening to Apology today and locked onto a guitar track that I'd never noticed before.

That distorted one in the background? Or is it something else I haven't picked up on?

Healthy in Paranoid Times is a much better album than Burn Burn. That album had some maturity to it. Now Raine is back to writing cheeseball lyrics like he did on Gravity.
