Yes, because the "alternative" is just that much better.

Douche DJ - Coming up we have new music from Puddle Of Mudd, Daughtry, Breaking Benjamin, and Our Lady Peace!

The days of needing commercial radio play to garner enough success to sustain yourself are over. If the music is good enough, people will listen, buy records, and come to shows. At this point, though, the music isn't good enough. Not even close. To be honest, the thing that puzzles me most is that this band doesn't listen to crap. So why do they insist upon creating it?

Trustworthy....no offense to you, but I think that graphic was perfect. You've been drinking way too much of the OLP Kool-Aid. The songs on this album are pretty damn good, but the production is f-ing horrible. It's not polished at all. If I crank it up too loud in my car/ipod/Studio monitors it starts to sound horrible.

I don't think any album I purchase should sound so bad when I crank it up. I'm really sick of the new "not polished underproduced music is actually indie/raw and cool" movement. That's complete BS. At first I thought the leak I downloaded was just a poorly sourced MP3, but when I bought my album I heard the same problem. That just pisses me off to be honest.

Either get a 200k studio with a great engineer if you're going to make the album at home, or go to a real studio. When you're a band of OLP's caliber that shouldn't be an issue. Did they record AYDWSML somewhere else? That song has a different sound than anything else on the album.

When you release an album into the world it's there forever. You should do everything within your power to make it sound as good as possible when your're a large worldwide band and can afford it.

If that means doing 40 guitar tracks then do it.....etc. One of my other favorite bands (The Smashing Pumpkins) get that....even if their songs aren't as good lately as they used to be at least the album is still good because Billy knows he can't make a better album in his living room. The production is still decent even when it still sounds raw. I don't hear weird clipping in the vocals or guitar parts when I crank it up. The lead parts also blend into the album well etc.

Fuck.....this album could have been really great. What a buzz kill. I suspect that most of the people here not being objective right now will wake up to this at some point.

The one saving grace is that the songs are being performed exceptionally well live.

I thought the production was fine on this album, along the lines of Gravity in terms of how it was produced. It has just the right amount of polish, without going overboard. What songs are you hearing clipping on? Why on earth would you need to crank it up so loud?

40 guitar tracks? Get real. When you go play live are you going to have 40 guitarists on stage, or maybe you'll have a super stacked guitar where you can play all 40 sounds. They said from the beginning this album wouldn't have a lot of overdubs, and they didn't want to overthink the process.

The only real production complaint I have is maybe Raine's vocals were pushed too far back this time, but the musicians all stand out and are arranged just right. They have all the quality equipment they need in Raine's studio. Why go out and waste all that money on a huge studio and personnel when you can do it at home? They'll probably break even on the album with the costs of all the other things involved. They'll make their money on touring and merchandise.

I think he meant 40 takes of a guitar track.

Isn't that what people have been complaining about though? The fact that they've overproduced songs in recent years and sucked all of the life out of them by doing 40 takes of everything, that is (see "Not Afraid").

The big proglem with this CD is not that it is a bad album. It's actually pretty great. It's the fact that Raine Maida has been making a big deal about this album in every single interview (just read or go to youtube) about how this is a "rock" album and it's a return to "naveed". He claimed that they did not "give into corporate pressure to coming up with a hit/singles laden album unlike the last album". The problem there is, he has done exactly the opposite of what he has preached. He infact made a Healthy in Paranoid Times part 2...the continuation. Half the songs sound like BonJovi and the other half like U2, but both with that Raine Maide (lets be honest, OLP is not a band) twist to them. The album is easily just the same, and in more cases, it's more laden with radio friendly 2.5/3 minute songs. The songs are not as progressive as "naveed" all the way up to "spiritual". Gravity was unique, though different and very enjoyable. Healthy is my personal fav, and so having a follow up album exactly the same is just great by me, I just can't stand his need to lie about what this album truly is. It is not a return to the past, and I'm glad it isn't.

If you listen to all the Raine interviews from the past year or so, you'll note that he says almost EXACTLY the SAME THIGN every time... so basically he probably figured it WOULD be like Naveed back before they even recorded it, and just repeated that all the way until now.. I mean it IS Raine we're talkin bout here

I think a lot of you are taking Raine's quotes out of context. You hear 'Naveed' and you get all excited (as did I the first time I heard it). But really, if you listen to those same interviews, I get the sense he's referring more to the way the album was recorded rather than the sound itself. In almost every interview he follows his quote about Naveed with 'in the sense that...' and then goes on to explain how it's just the four of them making music that they want to make with no time tables and no outside input, much like how Naveed was recorded (minus the producer obv).

And as far as the 'rock album' quote goes, would you not qualify this as a 'rock album'? I don't he said 'this is going to rock as hard as Naveed', he just said it was a rock album. You have two ends of the spectrum with Monkey Brains and with Signs of Life, but everything in between I would classify as rock songs. Do they rock as hard as Naveed songs? No, but again, I think you're missing the point.

This is obviously just my opinion, but that's what I hear from those quotes and when I listen to the album I do hear what they're talking about. You are right in that all the songs have that 'Raine Maida twist', but what would you expect? For a band that had it's biggest break with Gravity, you can't expect them to completely reverse out of Pop-mode. I think they did a fairly good job in balancing it all and I do enjoy this album quite a bit. Just my two cents though.

Nah, perhaps I'm not clearn enough. I'm just calling out Raine on his misinforming the fans, as so many artists do, despite him trying to sell that he is a "real artist" (he's just an activist now). I for one find Naveed to be the weakest album in their repetoire. Like I said, Burn Burn is Healthy part 2, and Healthy is my fav album. So that is a great thing. Frankly he scared me when he made those Naveed comments. Regardless, I just get tired of artists saying that every "next" album is a return to their roots, we went "raw" again blah blah blah....

So, I for one, am delighted with the new album.

I just hope that OLP get out and records more albums now, and quicker, since he has his own studio. Typically artists who get their own studio actually record less for the public (EVH anyone?) since they have no pressure. Getting fire under the ass is actually good for the fans.

Yea, I can definitely see your point. My response was more in general than it was directed at you or anyone, just something I continue to see in all the reviews and all that. I do think there is a bit of BS in all that 'raw/roots' business too, but at the same time, I wasn't there when Healthy was recorded so I don't know if the 30-odd other songs that didn't make it on the album were different than the 11 or 12 that did (or how much of that choice was the band's). It definitely is a fine line to walk, but there's no real way to know for sure. But the important thing is that everyone's enjoying the album (for the most part anyways).

And I hope you're right, let's hope the home studio means more tunes! (though I am a bit interested in hearing what's in store for Raine Solo Round II)

The Naveed reference was in terms of how the record was made. Nothing more, nothing less.

Naveed / Burn Burn = 4 guys making tunes with some nice gear.
