raine's voice sounds quite a bit Not Afraid-y in the White Flags studio version... I got the feeling of a more paranoid vocal from the live versions... and wow there's not enough Jer in it at all

Kinda disappointed really. It sounds extremely over produced. Can't they just put out b-sides and be like and say that is the new album?
But on refuge...man, I can see tv characters smiling with their names on the bottom introducing them.

Someone loop Refuge over that.

I have to reserve judgement until I can actually listen to them, but I'll respond later.
But clearly this album is sounding different than their others. It's much simpler (like gravity), but more creative, I think, from what I've heard.
However, I wish everything sounded a bit "sharper", like in Happiness or SM. Everything was sharp and crisp. It still sounds a little too over-processed. maybe that's just what is happening these days.
One song I like recently that sounds like OLP should (in terms of raw energy, not style) is Shame by Inward Eye.
I want screaching guitar like in If You Believe, and vocals like in Waited.
I know we'll never go back to those styles, but I wish we could go back to those "sounds", rather than the over-processing we have now.

I bet the songs get better, it's hard to like any song when you only hear 30 seconds of it. I like the flashing window trusty!
I wouldn't have been excited about Paper Moon if all I heard was the first thirty seconds of the track. Refuge is supposed to have a kickass guitar solo in it so I'm sure it gets better.

Raine seems to be using his mellow, extremely low-tone SOT vocals for most of these songs... but for some reason in Dreamland the vocals are jacked up right from the beginning, which I like. I don't think we can judge Refuge (the band's favorite song) til we hear some vocals

Yeah, we can't really judge it until we've heard it all.
The only thing I will say so far is that I wish they would have captured more energy. When Raine signs live, he sounds really great because of the passion in some of the songs. But for the last few years on the records it's a lot softer. Is he embarrassed to yell in the studio?

-The intro to Monkey Brains is very cool.

My preliminary thoughts on the tracks:
AYD: Flows well with the record.
Dreamland: I like the strings in the beginning, sounds like the song just builds momentum. The chorus will definately be catchy.
Monkey Brains: Pretty Sick.
The End is Where We Begin: Something U2 could have knocked off, I'm digging it but Steve is definitely channeling Edge.
Escape Artist: Love the drum beat.
Refuge: I like the guitar on it, I can picture it being something amazing on the record especially listening to the guitars...i don't think it will suit any sitcom. Even one as awesome as Growing Pains.
Never Get Over You: I like the keys in the beginning, it reminds me of Pilate.
White Flags: I love the music on this one and how Raine's voice is a little drowned by the guitars.
Signs of Life: Love it, a nice mellow track with a great melody.
Paper Moon: Stunning
