I don't think it's meant to be serious or creative. I think they just had a lot of fun with it and enjoyed it. The lyrics aren't much at all, but damn it's a catchy song.

To each their own I guess, but why release something that's not meant to be "creative"? I mean that's the uniqueness of anything you do... I'm with NCdudeN2K4 on this one, they used to have fun catchy songs that didn't sound like a teenager of 13 wrote them, musically or lyrically... Maybe the actual album version will prove me wrong though. As long as it's nothing like the live version!

I think the acoustic version on youtube is quite good. I hated the videos of the concert performances of it, but the one on the streets was very catchy and very good. Good structure to the song.

But Jesus, the guitar on the live version sounds like ass. The lyrics are meh. But Raine doesn't write the quirky interesting lyrics that he used to anymore. That's not a suprise.

The right stuff like it or not is single material, we still don't know what a studio version is like, so its hard to judge things.

Maybe we will have a reversal of things, I remember listening to the HIPT demo/live versions and those were awesome, but the studio versions sucks, as did Not Afraid, so maybe we will have an awesome version of TRS :p

Well, Monkey Brains is what allows me to tolerate The Right Stuff to a degree, perhaps it was just written to please their "post-Gravity" fans more than anything? I pray to god we see more Monkey Brain-type music on the album.

I just want to add my input here.

OLP is famous usually in one of two ways: For Naveed/Clumsy, or for Gravity/HIPT. It's hard for a band with such radically different sounds to continue to satisfy its entire fanbase at one time, especially when the old (and some new) fans are clamoring for a return to the old, and the new pop-y fans are screaming that if OLP changes their sound "OMG I'D JUST DIIIIIIIIIE."

Hence, singles like "The Right Stuff," and album music like "Monkey Brains." The old fans know something of what to expect from an OLP album, and the newer fans will get hooked by the "new" OLP and buy the album and hopefully enjoy the harder stuff too.

I guess that's how I see this dilemma. Now that they've made the transition to mainstream, it's difficult to retreat back to the way they used to be. It's not good PR for a band to alienate their fanbase, and while the goal should be to write music for the sake of writing music, not for the money or the fans, the truth is, if the fans don't buy the music, the band won't be making it very much longer.

I dig. I agree... they're caught between trying to satisfy their old fans from back in the day because they know that the oldies aren't satisfied with the new stuff. Then again, their catchy and mainstream work attracts young people, new fans, and will get their work more 'out there.'

I admit. I had the Right Stuff in my head for a long time. Listening to all three of the songs, I've decided that, for whatever reason, I really like them all.

The Right Stuff is meh... I find it laughably cheesy, but I love it in its own goonish and sing-along way.

Waiting For Something To Happen was better than I thought it'd be. It sounds like something that should've been on A Decade as a demo; it really reminds me of Better Than Here and Kiss On The Mouth. It's a little calmer and poppier than that, but at least it's not total HiPT material.

The bassline after the guitar piece in the opening of the song is currently in my head, and the line, "I'm coming after you" with the background vocals. I like that song a lot.

The thing is, the lyrics in all three songs don't compare to anything from Naveed - SM. They just seem like a few lines strewn together, naming a few objects or actions, and then a launch into a two-three line chorus.

I may be totally cynical... but I think it's safe to say that they're past their prime.

With the exception of maybe World On A String, when have they ever been "fun"? Catchy, maybe, but I don't think fun really applies. I agree with Matt in that despite lacking some lyrical depth, it's catchy as fuck. Raine's not an idiot. As much as I know some of you would love to believe that he's lost his marbles, the quality of the songwriting on the solo record speaks to the contrary. Remember, this is their record on their terms. Am I stoked about the new songs? No, not so much. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I couldn't possibly care less about new OLP. But if this is the road with which they wish to travel, then all the power to them. And before you play the "well I guess to each his own, I've been a fan since [enter date here]" card, believe me, I remember when Our Lady Peace was not a pop rock band just as vividly as you do.

edit: I agree, Shanae. They are past their prime. I've thought about this for a while but they really do remind me of Sloan.. They still release music and tour but, when push comes to shove, nobody but us ('us' meaning the core Our Lady Peace community as a whole) really care about this band anymore. It's sad but that's kind of the way it is..

I didn't even have the opportunity to see OLP in their golden days. I just caught on to them about a year ago. I remember hearing Innocent on the radio all the time when I was seven or eight, and I always remembered them as that. After another day of boredom, I began to explore from the four, maybe five, songs that I knew. I discovered Naveed and was amazed at it... but not in a good way. I couldn't believe that the OLP I knew as the 'guys that sing Innocent' would put out something as horrible as that.

Even when I first got A Decade, I wasn't too found of anything from Happiness... (I found it annoying) and I just laughed at Naveed.

Now, things have reversed. And I don't know where this story is going so I'll stop telling it....

Suthy, I kind of agree with you. They are like Sloan... they still release music, tour, and basically are still truckin'. Our Lady Peace is releasing music still, but the media doesn't care, general music fans don't care... in fact, I was very shocked at the number of people that don't know who OLP is. I still want to hear new stuff from them, but I'm a bit scared to because I know it'll never reach my high standards I put on them.

(Ah, I hate not being able to say what I mean. When I start typing, I have a point to get to, but by the time I'm done typing, I've lost it.)

The media does care, but OLP never got amazing amounts of press like Nickelback or other crappy bands so it seems like the media doesn't care. But there are plenty of Canadian magazines that write about them and keep up with them, and if you're in the northern parts of the US and can catch Canadian radio, they're still pretty big.

I'm not sure where you are so I can't say how much exposure you'd get to them on the radio, but in Canada they're still a pretty big band. At least in the Toronto area where they're from. I have a hard time finding people in Western NY and in Canada who don't know who OLP is.

They may be "past their prime" (although I would argue their prime came too early in that case, starting with Naveed and ending with SM) but they're still making some pretty awesome music. Don't count them out just yet.

And that's exactly what the band needs us all to do! I have faith in the guys. Even if they put out some really crappy music from now on, they still put out some amazing stuff way back when, and I thank my lucky stars I found them when I did. Plus, without them, there are a lot of things I never would have done, people I never would have met, and times in my life I never would have loved. I can't just give up on them because of a couple of crappy albums. Their good ones outnumber the bad!
