Favorite albums list — incorporating Escape Artist

Post by Heavy Alibi »

Hey all. I'm bored and just love listing my OLP rankings. I just thought I'd make a list of my favorite OLP albums, and incorporate Escape Artist based on the three songs we've heard that could potentially be on the album. Feel free to join in as well. Remember, the position of EA may not be permanent.

1. Spiritual Machines (2001) ... [absolutely insane art-rock album. Nothing compares, for me anyway. Seeing as it came only a year before Gravity, I'm hoping it wasn't OLP's creative swan song].

2. Happiness... Is Not a Fish (1999) ... [for me HINAF is a superior sequel to Clumsy, save SD & 4AM].

3. Naveed (1995) ... [totally rocking album... the best cure for any inner angst or need to rock out].

4. Clumsy (1997) ... [hard to list this one fourth, cause two of my favorite all-time OLP songs are in it — SD & 4AM — but for me the album overall is weaker than the other three].

5. Escape Artist (2009)... [sizing up to be a good album... even though "The Right Stuff" kinda scares me].

6. Gravity (2002) ... [I'm giving Gravity credit, it's what got me into OLP, though my musical taste was different at the time]

7. Healthy in Paranoid Times (2005) ... [in terms of OLP, a total disappointment. Some others may feel this about Gravity, but for me OLP "started" with Gravity... see above]

LOL @ ""The Right Stuff" kinda scares me".

I'd participate in this, but I've never been able to rank them.

Heh, I sympathize with that. For me the first four albums rotate a lot as well... depends on my mood really.

Spiritual Machines has been, is, and always will be my favorite album EVER.

Also, I think ranking them with Escape Artist now is pretty premature :P

Hmmm.

I guess things have moved around a bit for me.

1. Happiness...
I think this album is perfect and sees each of the band's members at their absolute prime.

2. Healthy in Paranoid Times
After stumbling for a few years, the band seems to have found their track again and this album absolutely surpassed my expectations. Sure, Walking in Circles doesn't rock as much as it originally did but that is one of the only disappointments. Plus, the songs transitioned so well to their live shows and this album introduced us all to Joel.

3. Spiritual Machines
This was my favorite for a long time. But then again it is also the one that introduced me to the band. It's still very good, but the songs are less memorable to me these days than either Happiness or HIPT. I wish they would rotate more songs from this album into concerts.

4. Clumsy
This is a solid album and features my favorite bit of drumming (The Story of 100 Aisles). I always wonder why Jer gave that stuff up in favor of more straight-forward beats. I wish they play some different songs from here as well.

5. Naveed
Great album. But I'm glad they quickly moved on to other sounds.

6. Gravity
wtf

Oh I was supposed to rank Escape Artist too... well I don't remember the songs very well. Oops! I will have to do that later!

I honestly don't know if I can do this... every album is so different that it's almost like a different band came in every album and had OLP play it.

All I can is that I'm leaving Escape Artist out for now, and that Gravity comes in last place. I somewhat like the album, but it's more of a guilty pleasure.

I may actually try this later, though...

Happiness
SM
Clumsy
Naveed
Gravity

I haven't heard any of the EA songs--I started to listen to some of the recordings, but none of them were great quality (none that I listened to--maybe since them some better versions have surfaced) and so I gave up. I couldn't follow the melody or anything.

Anyway, the only real explanation is that SM used to be my favorite, but now it's not. I'm not sure why that changed, but Happiness is now, to me, the representation of all that is right with music.

Sidebar: I'm going to start signing my posts with the fetus. If I can only remember how to make it.

[fetus] ?

EDIT: nope.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

LOL okay n/m that's just wrong. :uh:

Agreed, I would kill to hear new lives of "Wonderful Future", "All My Friends", "Everyone's a Junkie", and add in "Stealing Babies" and "Annie" from HINAF. They did perform "Babies" in 2001 though, I saw on YouTube. But I can't find any vids of the rest of those songs live from any point.

"Wonderful Future"'s only been played 5 times that we know of. All in 2002. Oh god it really was wonderful. But yeah, no surfaced bootlegs of it exist. :(

"All My Friends" hasn't ever been played that we know of.

"Everyone's A Junkie" has been played lots of times, and I'm sure we've got plenty of recordings of it... but the hubsite is being weird and I can't see exactly how many copies we have.

Same goes for "Stealing Babies".

"Annie" was apparently only played once, and it was when they played as Belly Flop Communist. If that show was recorded, we don't have it. :(

We've probably already been through this, but are you on the hub? Cos you really should join if you like live recordings!

Actually after checking Wikipedia:
"He played on the title track for the video game No One Lives Forever for the PlayStation 2."

I remeber downloading something from the Hub most likely saying Steve Mazur - Goldeneye N64 or something to that effect. But "No One Lives Forever" could easily be mistaken for a Bond game, thus a possible impropper credit to Golden Eye
