A_Strong_Alibi wrote:Well, my 2 cents on the issue is that this debate on their music style is getting a bit of a revival in the immediate pre-release of their seventh CD, because Raine had been quoted in interviews saying that this album was going to "define them", and that it was going to be a "proper rock album <b>again</b>", suggesting that he himself thinks the last 1 or 2 albums perhaps weren't.

What I find interesting is that we all tend to lump gravity and healthy in paranoid times together, when they are drastically different albums. I mean maybe both of them are a softer more accessible rock, but only compared to naveed and clumsy. The feelings, the themes, what the albums are as a whole.. they are drastically different to me.
what they did on HIPT was a total surprise to me because it was such a departure from gravity.

Basically what I am saying is that even though I've heard 2 potential songs for the new album, I have absolutely zero idea of what the new album is actually going to sound like, or what it will be about.

Yeah, I agree that they were very different albums. But I think we clump them together simply because the music differs so greatly from what appeared to be a slow, gradual evolution in their music from Naveed through Spiritual Machines. Both albums depart so greatly that we categorize 'em together even though they differ so greatly from each other.

For me, the political undertones totally destroyed HIPT, I think Raine was more concerned about his political messages being delivered than the quality of music. Gravity was less than original, but for me it's a great album to listen to, and if it wasn't by OLP, it would certainly be easier to enjoy. To me HIPT just isn't enjoyable at all (with the exception of A/L/S, which can hardly redeem the album).

But yeah, I can't decipher what their 7th album is going to sound like either, I just hope for the best. I'm also going to try to avoid listening to any singles that are released pre-CD (it will be hard), I'm just gonna grab the CD when it's released and listen to it all at once.

I've been reading this forum for a while, but I don't post much. I'm going to put my two cents in here though. I can't help but wonder how it would be had Raine never said the quote about the new songs getting back to "Naveed in terms of a proper rock album." I think that's really set everyone's expectations of the new songs to a level that they probably wouldn't be at if he hadn't. I just hope people don't set themselves up for dissappointment because they expect the new songs to sound Naveed-ish. I personally am still pretty excited.

To be honest, I can't help but hear similarities between the new songs and songs off HIPT. However, I already get the feeling that these new songs are going to be stronger than most of the songs on that album. Also, while I think HIPT was probably their weakest album as a whole, I actually really like the first 6 songs (A/L/S through Love & Trust). After that I get a bit lost and disinterested, but I by no means hate the album.

Lastly, I know it's been said, but I will reiterate; whatever comes out on this album is going to be true Our Lady Peace for this day and age, like it or not. Just four guys in a room releasing the set of tunes that they like most and feel most proud of. No excuses. Some will like it, I'm sure some won't. But I can't help but be excited to hear what they come up with.

I have to agree whole-heartedly with Sarah, let people discuss OLP till their hearts are content. If you have read the debate before in another forum, or in every forum, skim over it or leave the thread. It makes me a little sad when new people can't come here and express their opinions without being told, we've had that conversation already.

I agree that Gravity and HIPT are departures from earlier works. Personally I can't say I hate them. Some of my favorite moments happened after the release of HIPT, like meeting many people from this forum.

I know I stand in the company of very few in liking Raines solo work and his beard apparently  There was something about Raine when he was sporting the beard that was refreshing. My feeling is that the beard gave him freedom from the pretty-boy persona and a certain amount of incognito. The day of busking on the streets of Toronto was truly amazing. Yes it had little to do with his music and a lot more to do with his mission. It gave me a new perspective on Raine and society in general.

We must not overlook the jouney's of the other members of OLP in the past few years. Jeremy got married and had a second son and Duncan had a son to join the twins. Musically Jeremy has had a fair amount of exposure with Taggarts Take as well as a number or higher profile radio ventures. Duncan has worked a lot with Frankie Whyte which I think was really inspiring for him. He helped produce her album and did some touring. I think it was nice for him to be immersed in the enthusiasm of youth.
Steve has been working with a number of bands in the past few years playing live and in the studio. This has given Steve more confidence in his abilities

If you put all the personal and professional growth together, you have the recipe for a great album. I am pretty sure that it will not sound like early OLP but it will be true to who they are right now. The best part of all of this is that as individuals they realized that OLP is important to them, and they want to continue making music.

That's ok, Johnny. I'm sure we'll have that covered by random weirdos as soon as more stuff starts happening and the forums pick up again. ;)

Christine, your post is spot on. I agree with everything in it other than liking Raine's solo work. But I've already covered that. ;)

Anyway, to everyone who keeps comparing albums and hoping for another *insert old album name here*... the music's a whole lot more enjoyable if you don't compare it to anything else. Just take it in for what it is.

A Strong Alibi wrote:Gravity was less than original, but for me it's a great album to listen to, and if it wasn't by OLP, it would certainly be easier to enjoy.

See, I don't understand why you'd let yourself have that mentality. If it's a great album to listen to, it's a great album to listen to. Period. Stop putting preconceived notions on it, and just enjoy it. I guarantee you'll have a much better time that way. :)

By the way, didn't mean to single you out there, you just happened to post something that was perfect to quote on the issue.

Also, hiya, Steve! Don't be afraid to post more. :) We don't bite... much.

Yes, you're right, I really need to rid myself of that viewpoint. I know I'll enjoy the new album much more if I get out of this mentality.

Now that you mention viewpoints, I really ought to share something relevant, and quite ironic: I became and OLP fan through Gravity and HIPT. Had barely heard anything from the first four albums. I think after listening to the older music and realizing just how great it was, I started to hate on the last 2. Definitely an ironic, stupid mistake on my part . I need to start appreciating all of their work a little more. They deserve at least that :)

I'm glad we could all have a healthy, constructively critical discussion about this issue—it even brought an observing member out from the woodwork!

Hehe, bringing out lurkers is always fun.

And I'm glad to hear you're trying to get out of that mentality. It's amazing how many people do that to themselves (and not just OLP fans, fans of any band/thing)... people just gotta go with the flow, man!

LOL! Yeah, I love to play around with Photoshop .

Yeah, Pat's great! It's what they call me!

BTW, I edited my post after you replied, heh, I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to posts. I just added about how I became an OLP fan through Gravity n HIPT.

Oh and BTW again, were you once a heavy editor on Wikipedia for the OLP article? I seem to remember a "nikki"-like username that edited it a lot. I've did a lot of editing to it lately, I added the section on their new album.

Pat it is, then! :)

I'm also a hardcore perfectionist, so I understand your editing compulsion.

Yup, that was me! I bulked that wiki up so much it's ridiculous. I stopped editing when I kept getting crap from wiki moderators/admin/whatever about things being copyrighted, not cited, etc. It got really annoying when I'd post info I got directly from a band member, then I had to somehow prove it. I understand they're trying to keep people from posting whatever random crap they want, but it gets to a point that it's just flat out annoying.

Glad to hear other people have taken up the task. ;)

While I wasn't one of the people who was all "we had that conversation already!", I know I was definitely thinking it.
I just wanted to say that it's not so much that we wanted to quash discussion, or discourage new-comers, as that some of us were just so glad we had finally stopped having that conversation.
Maybe I'm exaggerating in retrospect, but it seemed like it went on for yeears.

I totally agree about not going into the music with preconceived notions. I have friends who wouldn't listen to Raine's solo stuff, because they hate when people from bands put out Solo stuff and it isn't as good or they get more famlous than the band
Personally, I loved his solo album. Beard notwithstanding :P

I actually really like Raine's solo work. Most solo albums sound almost exactly like whatever band the artist came from, but Raine went into a completely different direction than OLP had been going. In fact, Careful What You Wish For is one of my favorite songs right now...

Yeah, I'm not understanding the sudden solo-album-hate - I remember when it came out everyone was like "Yeah this is awesome!" So all these comments about it being a crap album really took me by surprise...

Well, dunno about anyone else, but that's cos I wasn't around here when it came out. I always disliked it. I just simply do not like Raine's talk-singing voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. Which is a shame, cos some of the actual music is really good. But it's just impossible for me to get past the sound of his voice.
