yes, i do point out the good once in awhile.

That is because I'm an English major and actually know proper grammar. I do not, however, go around pointing out everyone's mistakes like Laurel does.

How else are people going to learn? You're clearly not helping them out!

Maybe they'll continue to spell definitely with an A...

besides most of the comma placement comments are directed at Neil... and Neil has a stalkerish obsession with Laurel... so she uses the comma placement comments to scare him back to within the legal boundaries of his restraining order.

i have to contribute to discussions in some way, shape, or form.

my post count would be much lower if i didn't point out mistakes!

and yes, yelling about commas is a grand way to scare off the stalkers. makes 'em think you're crazy and not worth stalking.

actually, it's an optional comma. the last item before an 'and' in a list may have a comma after it, but it is not required; it's a matter of stylistics.

that is what I have always thought. Personally, I like the look of the extra comma it adds balance, and a pleasant aesthetics.

that's fine too. although i personally think it looks and sounds excessive. plus, the original sentence written by jk rowling was comma-less.

When I was taught grammar at school (a very long time ago, before some CMers were born) I was taught that you shouldn't put a comma before an and, but that this was one of the less strict grammatical rules, so you could put the comma there if you really wanted.
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

interesting. When i was taught, the comma before the and was the rule, although we were told that it would not be wrong to omit it. Of course me mam always felt bad that we had an inferior education over here.

Look what I found ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_comma

Apparently it's called an Oxford comma or a Harvard comma but is more accepted in US english than UK english.
