I don't want to spend a ton of money on it, and the cheapest laser I have seen is the one Brian suggested. HOWEVER I am NOT a fan of HP, and I'd rather have something better quality.

Whats your opinion on Lexmark?
Lasers are worth it in the long run. I've had my Lexmark laser for about a year now and still on the original toner and print quality is the same as it was on day one.
I can also build you a new PC that'll be a few umpteen times faster than your existing one. I'm building one now for under $350, probably closer to the $300 mark.
Anyone else looking for hot deals on computer junk I'm your man!
... and also the good people at the Staples in New Finland.

My dad built me a new computer for Christmas - I get it when I go home for Thanksgiving. But I'm responsible for the printer. I don't really have an opinion on Lexmark, since I've never used anything but HP (and whatever my dad has) and I just can't stand HP.

Seeing your hatred intrigues me. But you can't expect me to take your advice unless you tell me why I should never ever ever etc. buy a Lexmark inkjet.

Also, I'm definitely looking for laser. No more inkjets.

isn't that what i said?

also, i agree with jen. lexmark inkjet = the devil. they've got the highest priced cartridges of any printer company that i know of. you think you're getting a pretty good deal when you buy a $40 printer by lexmark, but then when you start spending $80 on cartridges every month or two, you realize you got duped. there are also known defects in some of the models that they put out.
if you don't want an hp, some of the other practical options left for you are samsung and brother. brothers are usually pretty cheap, and they'd probably be fine for draft printing, but i would personally steer away from them, since i've had a few unpleasant experiences with brother, quality wise. samsungs are pretty good, and the company's been around forever, so i would recommend them. lexmark would work too, for lasers, as per brian's recommendation. lexmark also has really good customer service. well, they did the one time i dealt with them anyway. very hasslefree. just asked me what was wrong with my printer, gave me a couple of suggestions what to do, and then took my name and address down and sent me a new printer within a week.
also, i don't know if you know about the toner cartridges for laser printers, megan. they normally cost somewhere between $80 to $150. a lot of people i tell that to at work are surprised, but that price isn't out of the ordinary for toners. however, toners last forever, and they don't dry up, so they're well worth the money.
phew! i knew i started working at staples for something!
Yea I had a Lexmark all in one inkjet for a while. Cartriges were $50 - $60 for black and color.
Refills did ok at best but this meant physically drilling through the top of the plastic and injecting the ink through a siringe. Not always the cleanest operation.
I gave up printing with it awhile back but the scanner part still works great.
Lexmarks website is pretty straight forward. HPs can be a minefield for those unfamiliar with it.
Never had to deal with Lexmark support but I have a good few horror stories from HPs tech support.
Staples may have better prices if you get a $25 of $100 coupon which are easy to find.

I have been using lasers forever, my dad only works with lasers because he hates replacing inkjet cartridges. Don't worry, I'm not dumb when it comes to cartridge prices - spending $150 on a laser cartridge that will last me two or three years vs. spending $40-$80 on black/color cartridges every few months would just overall be a very cost-effective way to do things. My dad only replaced his last toner cartridge I think once before he got rid of the printer, and he'd had it for years and my brother and I did a ton of printing on it.
I'd like a color laser only because sometimes I do like to print some things in color. But I just don't know if I want to drop the money on it right now. Maybe later. We'll see.
As to the Brothers suggestion, if they're only good for draft printing I'm not going to waste my money. My printer right now can print drafts. What I need is something to print a quality document so that I don't have to rush over to campus and print out something on their printers after spending an hour trying to find a computer to sit at.
Lexmark is sounding like a good option at this point. I do plan on shopping around though - maybe next weekend after my first seminar paper is done (it's due on Monday, 12-20 pages, and I haven't even started writing it) I'll head out to Buffalo and see what the stores out there have. Living in a small town is shitty because all we have is a WalMart.

Sheila and I are planning on heading out that way soon anyway since she wants to go to Olive Garden, so I might as well check it out while I'm there.
