This is absolutely insane.
What on earth would have possessed him to do that?

There's enough pro wrestling sources out there confirming that it is indeed true.
Good for them. However, I did a search and came up with nothing aside from the official WWE site, so I went to Wiki instead.

464. My second cousin is an officer with GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) and what he's heard in his circle is that Chirs Benoit's wife killed their son Daniel, called Chris and told him to rush home because of an emergency which is why he missed last Sunday's Vengeance PPV. Upon arriving home Benoit killed his wife in a rage for the death of his son and then killed himself Monday morning. His wife's body was found in the master bedroom, strangled with the cord from an alarm clock. The son's body was found in his room appearantly suffocated with a garbage bag. Chris then wrote a suicide note explaining what had happened, apologized to his family, his other children (from a seperate relationship), and his fans. He the fasioned a slip-knot noose from from rope taken from the garage and hung himself from the ballaster in the foyer of his suburban Atlanta home.

Whether it was murder, or not.....its still sad. If you were feeling that way; its hard to tell what anybody would do.
I've got in fist-fights with best friends involving rage. Yes, I did not kill them.....but it got ugly enough that I wound up in the E.R. one time.
Benoit has always been a favorite; back since I first watched him on WcW.

In 2000 Our Lady Peace was asked to write a song for a WWE wrestler. I admit to being heavily influenced by martial arts but entertainment wrestling was never my thing. I knew very little about the sport. Our drummer Jeremy was more the wrestling aficionado in the band. Nevertheless one night in ..Toronto we met with a professional wrestler for dinner at a local restaurant chain. His name was Chris Benoit. Immediately I was struck by his appearance. Not overly tall but freakishly muscular and wearing a very large neck brace. He had suffered a few herniated discs in his neck days before and was on hiatus until he had surgery and was able to rehab. Throughout the evening we learned about Chris and about the sport. Chris was a purest and came from a true wrestling background. His technical abilities were revered by all who followed him. Above that he seemed like a decent, nice man if not a little tortured. Nothing surprising coming from someone so dedicated to this absurd lifestyle of injuries, painkillers, steroids and constant travel...
We ended up recording a theme song for him in Seattle during the next few months. We would see him a couple more times at various shows on tour in the US and he seemed pleased with the song we wrote for him.
Today I learned through numerous emails and Myspace comments that Chris Benoit had killed himself along with his 7 year old son and wife. I think back to that dinner we had years ago and struggle to come to grips with the fact that this was Chris' destiny. Assuming the authorities are correct in their assessment, I can't help but think Chris must have been in immeasurable pain both psychologically and physically. We may never know the answers to why this successful man ultimately was unable to handle this world and in no way do I personally absolve him of any guilt concerning the death of his son and wife. I guess I simply feel sad and somewhat shocked that someone I knew briefly had such a terrible and tragic ending to their life.

Wow I just saw this on Johnny's facebook. Reading all about what happened is so sad

Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.
And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the IMDB quote appears to be somewhat correct, aside from stating that the wife killed the boy. The press conference held today stated that she was murdered Friday, the son on Saturday, and then Chris took his own life on Sunday or Monday sometime.
Much like Raine, I am puzzled as to what would have been such a major issue in one's life that it could only be dealt with by the death's of ones family. Benoit had the respect and admiration of all his co-workers, employers, and millions of wrestling fans across the globe. He had long been a favorite of mine since I first saw him in 1991. WWE and other wrestling organizations have pulled down any tributes to him, removed merchandise (ToysRus has even pulled figures from their shelves supposedly), and Vince McMahon reportedly apologized for the hastily produced tribute show. Mixed feelings about it all. I hate that the end of someone's amazing life will be forever scared by something so horrible.

nvestigators found anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man nicknamed “The Canadian Crippler” was unhinged by the bodybuilding drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as “roid rage.”
The boy had old needle marks in his arms, Ballard said. He said he had been told the parents considered him undersized and had given him growth hormones.
The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a news release Tuesday evening saying steroids “were not and could not be related to the cause of death.”
“The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage,” the company said, adding that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

Written: June 26, 2007On Saturday, June 23, Chris Benoit was slated to appear at a WWE live event in Beaumont, Texas. That afternoon, Benoit contacted WWE to inform them that his wife and child were ill, and that he would not be able to attend the show.
WWE executives rebooked Benoit’s flight for the following morning, allowing Benoit to miss the Beaumont event making alternate arrangements for him to attend the pay-per-view event in Houston on Sunday.
WWE employees attempted to confirm with Benoit his travel plans but were unable to contact him.
Early Sunday morning, between 3:51 and 3:58 a.m., Benoit sent five text messages to co-workers:
Text Message 1 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53 a.m.) - Chris Benoit’s cell phone
“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”
Text Message 2 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53 a.m.) - Chris Benoit’s cell phone
“The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open”
Text Message 3 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:54 a.m.) - Nancy Benoit’s cell phone

Text Message 5 to one co-worker (sent 6/24 at 3:58 a.m.) - Nancy Benoit’s cell phone
“My address is 130 Green Meadow Lane. Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”
Throughout the day on Sunday, WWE made numerous attempts to contact Benoit both at home and at local hospitals in the Atlanta area. As of 11 p.m., WWE officials were unable to establish contact with Chris Benoit.
At 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 25, WWE officials were notified of the text messages sent to the co-workers the previous day. By 12:45 p.m., WWE had contacted Fayette County Sheriff’s office requesting they check on the Benoit family.
Fayette County Sheriff's office made contact with WWE at approximately 4 p.m. advising that they had entered the house of Chris Benoit and found three deceased bodies – an adult male, adult female and a male child. WWE was told that Benoit’s home was now considered a major crime scene.
The decision to cancel the live event scheduled in Corpus Christi that night was made between 4 and 5 p.m. In keeping with company policy, and with limited knowledge regarding facts of the case, WWE choose to air a memorial dedicated to the career of Chris Benoit. As facts emerged surrounding the case, all tributes to Chris Benoit were removed both on-air and on WWE.com.

I can't imagine what would have been going through his head to make him kill his wife and child and then himself. There had to be something.....

So for any person who's ever killed someone under the age of 10, chances are it's because of steroids?
He could have been affected by the steroids, but I don't think this was a case of roid rage.
...you took lando's statement a bit broadly. in this case, which he is referring to, he means that steroids are the most likely cause. of course he doesn't mean that it explains the murder of every child under 10. it's ludicrous to think he means it that way.
and there is a very good chance that steroids may have played some sort of role in this. however, they probably weren't the entire reason. steroids, combined with stress, a previous violent history, possible mental instability...there's a lot that can contribute. it's hard to completely rule out one thing, until the toxicology reports come back.

Benoit tragedy raises question of steroids link
Questions are being asked about whether anabolic steroids may have been a contributing factor in the murder-suicide deaths of Canadian pro wrestler Chris Benoit and his family.
Investigators found anabolic steroids in the house.
Steroids can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."
A wrestler who toured with Benoit for years said he's seen the harm steroids can cause. "One little thing goes wrong and you're going to see an outburst, a rage," said Jacques Rougeau.
