Which OLP do you want?
Healthy In Paranoid Times sounded very much influenced by Classic Rock in a lot of spots. Bands like The Who, The Band, etc. So my question is do you want more of that type of music, only better..or the more progressive/alternative sound of the Raine Maida solo album? Personally I think the sound they were going for on Healthy would suit them very well with a better producer. And I very much like Paranoid Times, its just unrealized and too subdued in some parts.

I prefer the old OLP to the "new" OLP. I'd like to hear more along the lines of Spiritual Machines, and I'd love it if they'd mix it up with sounds off of Naveed and Clumsy.

HIPT reminded me of Grade D version of Happiness...it just sounds flat and uninspired beside it. My initial impression of some songs were good, but when produced by Rock, just didn't sound right.
I'm not sure if its the recording technique or what, but every instrument sounds so much clearer with Lanni.....I wasn't a big fan of the instruments they chose either..........I was a little shocked that they picked that sound....with some shoddy lyrics..............Raine use to write interesting stuff...
If they are going to be a rock band, I'd prefer the guitars and passion of Naveed, mixed with the atmospheric alt-pop of Happiness (think Blister, Annie, Waited).......I wish Raine would challenge people with his lyrics instead of feeling the need to simplify them. There's just no soul to it........
I know they aren't the same band without Mike, but when they added Steve I thought they would some "ooomph" to their sound because they said Mike was too atmospheric...........but I find his guitar style so much more passionate and interesting than what we heard. Lanni seemed to bring out the best of them, both creatively, and sonically.
I don't care who they work with now as long as they produce something with substance and quality. Take some chances for fucks sake.........Not Afraid went from simple but cool rock song to something that would make Avril Lavigne cringe.........how does that happen???

i'm not interested in hearing them recreate their old sound. its not going to happen. new decade, new guitarist. i think angels losing sleep is one of their best, if not best song ever. honestly, i think steve mazur is a really good guitarist, i think they just need to pick a better producer for that to shine. some stuff on hipt is really good; als, love & trust, wipe that smile, al genina specifically.i like the more rock sound of clumsy. their best album, imo. naveed is good, but they were very raw. spiritual machines was a little poppy.
I'd love for them all to isolate themselves in the middle of nowwhere so they have no outside influence and create something completely out there. Something that makes Aphex Twin or Thom Yorke ask what drugs they were on. I know OLP has the ability to make something like that. I just want a cd I can listen to a lot, put it down for a month, come back and be like "Whoa, I didn't hear that in there the last time i heard this?"
Unfuck The World
I'm really a big fan of all the layered sounds, but I realize that isn't the style they are going for. Raine's solo material is very interesting, and I think OLP could create some good interpretations of it. I agree, he should definitely use lyrics that aren't so straight forward. Musically, I anticipate hearing more tracks that going to be similar to HIPT, just produced better.

i was going to post in this topic yesterday and had it all written out, and then my internet died right when i hit "submit" so i figured the topic was jinxed and didn't try again.
except for now! i really like raine's new solo stuff better than some of olp's more recent stuff. it'd be neat if olp did more stuff like that in the future

I find their earlier work, like many bands, has the most original sound and it's what got me into OLP. The new stuff in comparison, while having OLPs definitive sound, sounds creatively watered down and a little uninspired, but I'm certain it's down to Bob Rocks negative influence. But to answer your question, I think OLP do Pop much better than they do Rock.

I agreed with everything you said up until your last comment. Because Naveed is my favourite album and was the album that got me into them, back when it was an actual NEW album. Although I love the next 3 albums too and Happiness and SM are a little more poppy than clumsy and naveed.

Can't say that HIPT was one of my favorites. Lyrically, it was acceptable, I'm just not thrilled with the direction. While I'm a realist and know that they aren't going to produce another Spiritual Machines, I wouldn't mind seeing something with the raw energy of Naveed and the tempo of Gravity. It should be interesting to see what the next album holds.

1. Clumsy- easily my favorite. very creative and free flowing, yet catchy album.
2. Naveed- straight forward agressive..a great rock album.
3. Healthy In Paranoid Times- Not a popular opinion but I really like this album. A couple of the songs are awesome. Al Genina, Angels and Love and Trust. More mature sound. Raine Maida sounds bored on the vocals. Thats the only down spot of this album.
4. Happiness- Good album, but I prefer the rock sound of the 1st two to it much more.
5. Spiritual Machines- this one has kind of fallin out of favor with me. Poppy, and you can kind of hear the band losing steam on it.
6. Love Hope Hero- Only 4 songs but they're that good. Careful What You Wish For blows away any song OLP has done since probably Spiritual Machines.
7. Gravity- bland and mainstream. i can see why they did it though. it extended their career. nothing on here i would consider an olp staple.

I want a new OLP, nothing like the rest.
The first four songs (sans Angels Losing Sleep) really hold this record back. The back 8 tracks are fantastic. I like the album as well.
Pretty much agree. Although Potato Girl and Thief are two of their greatest songs.
The CD is great in small doses, but I don't know how good its repeatability is. Everyone's A Junkie has a killer chorus that I can't get sick of, though.
Like Healthy In Paranoid Times, I think the second half of this CD is much better than the first half. The first half is a little too poppy for me (Life, Right Behind You), but If You Believe, Everyone's A Junkie, All My Friends and The Wonderful Future are great. I'll throw Middle of Yesterday in there as well, but I'm not completely happy with that song.
Not a terrible CD. But like you said, nothing really sticks out except, well I think, Innocent. A lot of people like Not Enough, but I can't get into it.
