Are OLP finished?

Post by egotist »

I have to wonder if we'll see OLP record a new album again. Their audiences seem to have dwindled considerably from the days of Clumsy/Gravity. Have they made any on-record comments about their plans?

They plan to get back together and work on another album this year. Probably won't spend 2 years making this one. I believe this will finish up their contract with Sony and according to Duncan after that the plans are to continue for a while as an independent band (the Duncan stuff was said off the record though).

The Barenaked Ladies are independent now I believe. I think it'll work out better.

But Raine is on tour....

On a related side note,
Does anyone expect any real commercial success from Raine's solo efforts?

It doesn't matter if Raine's on tour. The band Tool writes all their material without maynard, then he comes in and writes lyrics to the music they've come up with and suggests tweaks and changes to what they already have.

I'm not seeing it in stores or anything...I don't see any kind of commercial attempt on his part either. Maybe if he did more than just an EP, put out a whole album, it might get more hype.

Does he even have a record label backing his ep? Who released it? Because it costs a lot to manufacture the cds and inserts on a large scale to achieve commercial success... if he's doing it independently it would make more sense since he wouldn't have to mass produce copies of the album.

Raine produced it at home under his Kingnoise label and it was distributed by Netwerk the management who looks after Chantal, Avril and BNL.

That's part of his plan. When I talked to him about his solo stuff almost a year ago he said he'd make it available via myspace, produce it on his own and sell it online and at shows, donate any proceeds to charity, etc. He's trying to sidestep much of the music industry crap that he's so tired of.

Apparently the whole album will be done soon.

According to the OLP.CC, they're recording the new album right now.

the .cc source is .net, and Raine said they have "begun writing", not recording.

And by "begun writing" they probably meant "started listening to the other 30-something songs from HIPT again"

Hopefully it inspires them to let Duncan make all the decisions.
