the part where he sings:

But one second chance could change everything

is the best part of the song, especially the last line. i actually really like the piano/strings.

HOWEVER, most of the verses and how they're "rapped" is pretty bad. if he put these words to some kind of melody instead of spoken-word, i think i'd like it much better... he has too many 3,4-syllable words for my liking, but i can't complain about that.

i really liked this lyric, though:

Me and them, we two birds of a feather
Of a feather

I like that he's finally trying to say something. Unfortunately, I'm not really fond of the way he's saying it. It's been done before. One or two lines naming people is great and can really help to accentuate a point. But a whole song of it just gets repetitive and doesn't really get anywhere. By the second verse I was tired of hearing him name names. We get it, Raine, now what's YOUR point? Your name's not going to appear in any songs if you just keep singing (well, not quite singing) about other names. We get that these people were important. Now show us that you can be important too. Show us that you have a message. Tell us your message.

Also, the man needs to stop this talk/rap shit. He's got a good voice, USE IT. There's no reason for this talking/rapping crap. It's unpleasant and actually sounds rather uncomfortable and silly, which just undercuts the serious message he's trying to get across.

And I was really looking forward to this, too :\

yes, exactly! the whole song reminds me of something a late-teens aspiring artist and armchair activist who just got his hands on his first piece of recording equipment would write.

Yes. armchair activist. if i didn't know him better, I'd easily think that this was written by an angsty highschooler who doesn't know the complexities of these things (or anything, for that matter) except the fact that HE HATES BUSH LIKE OMFGZ.

that's the message i'm getting from him, anyway. he needs to smarten up his lyrics, say it in a different way (the "They just talk shit, they ain't gonna make nothing better" is really too cliche), and also from a musical point of view, sing instead of attempt to rap.

I'm actually really digging it. Raine's lost his cryptic-lyrics but he's still able to surprise me. It's kind of a new feel and I'm diggin it.

Based on listening to it one time, I can say that I like it. I didn't really feel like he was rapping during the verses, it felt more as if he was reading poetry or something. But anyway, the chorus gave me a little Beck vibe, it must've been the clapping or something... :freak:

I think if he can have a blowaway single that he can gather a big following.

Oh man that song is freaking amazing, it seems like you guys have been dying to get some experimentation from the band and now that we finally have it we just complain. I've been listening to the song all day, it's so genuine. It's not rapping, it's spoken word poetry or 'slam' as he puts its - the names mentioned in the song (Saul Williams, Patricia Smith) are really well known Slam poets. If you want alternative and different, this is as alternative and experimental as you can get. It's like underground poetry, we touch upon it a bit in lectures. Doesn't seem like my profs are too into it though.

I was expecting total Kelly Clarkson sell-out crap music.

This impresses me. I enjoy the song, and the sound he's going for and it sounds really well done to me. And the Bridge is really good.
I agree that as far as lyrics go, its nothing that he hasn't already said in OLP and its not really new or inspiring. And it seems a little choppy to me... like there are a couple of fragments where there is no continunity. But other than that, I really don't mind it.

I'm glad he's not going for mainstream. I honestly thought thats what he would try.

I really like it. The lyrics could be better, but looking at past demos, the final version will probably be a lot different lyrically. For the better, I don't know.

My first impression of this song was somewhat dismal. I think it just caught me offguard, being soo different from OLP. Hopefully it'll grow on me...

your profs aren't into, and some of us aren't in to it. yes, it's something new, and we're all happy that raine's branching out. but...as rob said, that doesn't mean we have to like it. raine tried something new, which some people will like, but not everyone. we're not complaining, in so much as expressing our opinions on the song.

also, slam is a hugely different genre than what a lot of us usually like, and is something new that a lot of us were just introduced to through this song. i know to my ears, it sounds almost bizarre, when i'm used to the conventional idea of music.

so am i. i'm thankful that he's not taking the poprock route (like a lot of solo artists, actally).

maybe this will grow on me (because i know i like some things about the song) but first i'd have to get over the lyrics.
