OLP Songs that sound like they're aping other songs...

Post by egotist »

I was just listening to "Lebo's River" and all I can hear in the verse keyboard part is Everclear's melody from "Wonderful".

This reminded me about "Stealing Babies" and the lift from Collective Soul's "The World I Know".

Can anyone think of others? Or better yet, bands that have aped OLP?

I think it's reference to Eacrett, but I'm not sure.

Dear Mike, you never mailed those videos to me. You're fired!

Our Lady Peace pretty much "ape" themselves. Innocent and Made To Heal have similar chord progressions in the verse. Its a stretch, I know, but there you go.

Well I've never heard anything in an OLP song that sounds like any other band's songs to me...

But I HATE listening to the new RHCP song "Danny California" because it's a blatant ripoff of "Last Dance With Mary Jane" and Tom Petty just does it so much better.

Aren't they exactly the same, except played in a different key, and with a few random high notes in MTH?

Whatever is stolen from Shooter! Which is apparently the same as something called Dynamite Kid's theme song.

Paritally true. Shooter was written by Jim Johnston who does most all of the WWE wrestlers theme music. It was Chris Benoit's before he started using Whatever. Jim is credited on the track along with Raine, Mike, Jaime, Duncan, and Jer.

Dynamite Kid was a wrestler back in the 80's and early 90's. He was one of Benoit's inspirations and is often compared to him. :O

Have you heard Tom Petty's new song? The intro sounds almost identical to the intro to "One Burboun, One Scotch, One Beer" by George Thorogood. So, I don't know what Tom's whining about.

how about all those U2 songs? I heard The Edge even admitted to it lol.

like I said before... you know it's the 21st century when OLP can write a better U2 song than U2 can.

I've said this manny a time but I'll say it again ...

When I was in Jr. High and Supermans dead first hit the radio I thought it was the Smashing Pumpkins.

And whatever the new Supernova song was tonight sounded very 'World on a String' 'esq If I remeber I'll post up a link to it tomorrow and everyone can judge for themselves.

Overall though there is no one that can re-create the OLP sound. It's just unmistakeable. I can remeber when SOT first hit the radio waves. It was on 89X and it was sort of a rainy day so it wasn't comming in all that great. I knew the single was comming but never herd any previews like we did w/ HIPT.

But for the 2-3 seconds at a time that it was comming in I was like .. was that ?? .. Is this ?? ... That's gotta be .... YES!!!!

Unlike some artists *Cough* RHCP's *Cough* with OLP every album is unique. But even though each album has it's own motif that OLP sound is still unmistakeable.

Yes, Raines voice is probably about 70% of that sound but the rest of the band is a huge 30%.

Like if you heard Raine solo it's unmistakeble who it is right on the spot.
Listening to the band alone, it may take a second but they still have that sound that perks your ears even if your not paying attention.

Just like someone can be talking in the backround and it's all just backround noise your not really listening to untill someone mentions your name and you hear that perfectly clear. There can be random noise on the radio but the instant an OLP chord hits the radio your know what's comming.

that U2 thing caught my eye cause i have always thought the intro and verse parts that joel plays on boy sounds just like either with or without you or where the streets have no name...cant think of which one right now
Is there something good, something more?
Is there anything worth dying for?

the whole song sounds like it should be a U2 song. It's quite easy to imagine Bono's voice for that track. It's much more U2 than it is OLP sounding.

I've always wanted to hear Raine do Rebel Yell by Billy Idol. His voice is perfect for that song.
