Really, I'm just sick of people giving bands and artists flak for being "sell-outs" more "put-together" or "less real" than whoever's in their current playlist.
Musicians have different ways of doing things. The White Stripes and Nirvana might have good live albums/dvds that haven't been edited or tampered with at all. Our Lady Peace has one that has. Both methods have merit, and it doesn't make a band "less respectable" to do either.

Well, I am not really trying to compare OLP's live album to any other particular live album from a band that I think is cooler.

I just feel that a live album or DVD should be representative of what it is like to see that band live. Every overdub that is done in a studio takes away from the essence of what a live album or DVD even is.

When they later record and insert a drum fill that is used to mask the sound of an audience singing incorrect lyrics, that hides the fact that when you go to an OLP concert, the crowd WILL fuck up Is Anybody Home.

Especially notable is the entire of Whatever. What they are doing here is taking a live recording and trying to manipulate it to make it sound as much as possible like the studio recording. If you don't know what I'm talking about, Raine's voice has been filtered to mimic the studio version. At live concerts you would hear his unfiltered voice when they play Whatever. It is not representative of their live shows to do this, and yet this is how they label it.

Now, it is certainly possible to listen to/watch Live and enjoy it for what it is. But it is not an honest representation of their live shows.

Also, they very well could have later in the studio said "I messed up there" and rerecorded a bit to edit in.

I didn't mean you in particular with that comment, sorry.

I agree that what you describe is probably the best way to do it.
Our Lady Peace did theirs differently. It may not be preferable, but I really don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Plus, we all knew it was taken from a bunch of different concerts, didn't we?
...Or did we know that from the internet and it's not on the dvd?

It shouldn't take much to figure out. He talks about being in Edmonton, and Montreal, during different parts of the concert.

The overdubbed drums made me think about the Jimi Hendrix Experience playing Hawaii in 1970. I can't remember if it was an equipment failure, or because the wind was blowing so hard (the played outdoors on an inactive volcano crater), but the drum track for the concert was rendered worthless. Mitch Mitchell had to overdub the drums in the studio. He did so while they played a video of the concert in front of him. The final mix sounds as good as being there in person, with the crowd still present in the background.

I would have had less of a problem with that if they simply took the best takes from the entire tour and put them on one disk rather than combining a group of takes into one song.

I don't think they cut different concerts into one song on the CD, but it is very likely on the DVD.

On the CD, the intro of Starseed is from Montreal but the rest of the song is not. Other than that, all of the songs on the CD and DVD that are from Montreal, are entirely from Montreal, or at least they used the Montreal sound as a base and possibly did some overdubs with other stuff (since the recordings match up with the Montreal audience recordings perfectly).

Guess what? It's better than not having a LIVE DVD of OLP performing at all and if you bought it you agree.

I actually work in the music industry....and I won't name any names, but remember that Ashley Simpson performance? Almost every established band is doing that to one degree or another. Some bands rely on it exclusively..and some bands just use certain parts for overdubs.

I won't go into who uses what just because it might ruin the experience....But I will tell you 100% of a Shania Twain show is coming off of a Pro Tools Rig from a trigger.....vocals and band. They just switch her microphone on inbetween songs... kinda interesting.
