yes... Materazzi said something to him (no one knows what yet. Zidane is going to go public with what was said at the end of the week) and he turned and headbutted him in the chest causing Materazzi to go down quicker than Sinead. It was with about 10 minutes left in extra-time, and really didn't have any affect on the final outcome as the player who missed for France in the penalty kicks was going to kick whether Zidane was available or not.

Zidane has had a history of this type of stuff, and it's just unfortunate his temper went on him in the last minutes of his career. Something really bad must have been said to him, but still, he's a professional - he should be used to guy's trashtalking.

what i've heard is that Zidane's mother has a terminal illness, and this was probably a typical italian jab at her.

Should be interesting...

I've heard a number of rumours ranging from insulting his mother to insulting his kids/family by insinuating that his kids aren't actually his, and that his wife had an affair. I've also heard that the remarks were racist, which to me seems like the only type of comment that could be made that would result in that type of outburst. If soccer is anything like any other sport, Zidane will have heard every name in the book before he was 18 years old, so I can't see something minute leading to that type of reaction.

I heard that it was 'Play for your own country, terrorist', as zidane was born in algeria. but that doesn't seem personal enough to really piss him off. something that ignorant is offensive, but easily ignored.

maybe its just me because im a visible minority and have been the vicitm of racism in the past but... i dont particularily like or feel that "just because he's a professional and has heard it all before" he should have either a) endure it or b) react any differently.

frankly i'd be tempted to do much worse if that was me on the other end of that.

just because ive been called something many times doesnt mean i have to actually like/accept it and neither should he

as an athlete though you need to be disciplined to the point where just because someone says something doesn't mean you react to it. Racism is obviously not a good thing, and I've never heard anyone get called something racist while I was on the ice, but I've been called just about everything you can think of and then some, and you just let it go.

If something racist was said, especially on a global stage, you can go public with it after the game and especially in football where they're trying to stamp out racism, that player will be punished for it. If you react though, the racists win.
