They played the new song tonight - it's called A Kiss On The Mouth or something like that. It was a HIPT reject. I didn't like it.

Duncan told us that they're trying to get out of their contract with Sony because they're really not getting the support they need (which we've all noticed) and they're aiming to do a new album very soon.

THANK GOD. Get them out of their contract with Sony. Just pray to God they do not go to RCA. I think they could be the worst label ever. An indie really would NOT be a bad thing.

It appears to me that they need new management too. Managers are the people that get them the gigs. The label primarily works with them on their albums. Their manager gets them TV and radio gigs and newspaper, magazine and web interviews, as well as plans their tours. Having a good management company is probably more important than having a great record label. There are so few left since they've all merged, so I don't think any of them are that different from one another.

Well, Duncan said that it's really hard to book shows outside of the US and Canada when Sony won't release the album there, so I don't know how much the management can really be blamed for it, I'm sure they're trying.

but even here the support is getting weaker. 95% of venues on this tour are not sell-outs, and many are small venues. They did not have this problem a few years ago.

They waited until all hype about their album had ended and all singles had fizzled to go on tour though. What was that all about?

This is the offical album tour though.

I mean, I saw them in 05 too, but it wasn't a real album tour like this is.

OLP is going the way of Sloan where they get played on the radio, but people are pretty indifferent to them. They've been around so long that no one really cares or notices when they release something new. Also, they don't have the value of a band like the Hip who are able to sell out arenas in Canada simply based on their back catelog (and Gord Downie is hands down a better performer than Raine is). So they'll basically go the road Sloan has taken where their time has past, but they're still mainstays in Canadian music just based on their name.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

They changed their style of music and a lot of Canadian fans are tossing them aside because their music is more mainstream and pop-influenced. THey liked the old "Peace" which was a little more dynamic and original.....a lot more passion involved.

i seriously don't know whether i prefer olp's music to be a) good but always a bit same-y, or b) has good phases and bad phases ie. bob rock era. i like it that they have a different sound with each album, despite the fact that some fans were turned off by the newer "poppy" mainstream sound..........

I don't know, looking at how much money/time Sony gave OLP to make HIPT it doesn't really seem like it's a problem in terms of a relationship with OLP and Sony, rather a problem with OLP and Sony's marketing team.

If no European tour goes ahead, I would be pretty much devastated because I have never seen OLP and I've been waiting for them to come over here for a very long time now. :(

Reza, I think the problem was that they got the support from Sony whilst making the album, but then lots of people got fired and they're no longer getting that support at all.

And it looks pretty unlikely that they'll get a European tour. Duncan said they've tried to get on a few things, but without the label support people don't want to take them :(
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.
