Awww Kathy, that sucks so much. I spent part of my time with braces when I was about 17 with big gaps where two of my front teeth were taken out. I was lucky that I wasn't as self conscious back then - but you learn not to open your mouth quite as much. Still, the end result is worth all the hassle and now I barely remember it. Now I have similar issues with the massive scars I have from my last operation which are pretty much visible all the time - and I'm much more self consious nowthan i was back then. There are good days where you just say "fuck it, I don't care what people think of me" and bad days where you just curl up and cry because it gets to you so much, and then as time passes there'll be days where you don't think of it at all. It's not going to be easy, but you already know that. And if it means an end to your pain then it has to be worth it. *big hugs*
Some interesting facts for you:
"In some african tribes having a gap in your front teeth was a sign of wisdom."
Talking about Chaucer's Wife of Bath: "She's gap-toothed, a medieval sign that some believe had to do with sexual accomplishment, or with a bold, faithless nature, or with travelling."
Just tell that to anyone who has anything to say to you!!
Also, you know the CM will always be here for you. Just think of all that CMing you can do while you're off work after the operation
Finally, I can't believe that Canada doens't have free dental care for children. Ours is free up to the age of 18 (19 if you're still in full tijme education) or if you're pregnant, and maybe if you're over 60 as well. Otherwise you pay a lot!
