CD's for $5.99

Post by faninor »

Kym found a nice website for buying CD's if you live in the US, www.yourmusic.com

$5.99 per disc and free shipping. It is run by BMG, so the cases do have the small things on the back that say they were manufactured for BMG (which I know annoys some people). Their selection is alright, they don't have everything that I've searched for, but they've had quite a bit.

Basically, you browse the website and find discs you want, then add them to your queue, and each month they will send you the disc that's at the top of your queue. If your queue is empty, they'll charge you $5.99 anyway and send you nothing, though, so be sure to keep stuff in your queue. If you want to get more than 1 CD per month, you can always choose to add it to your shopping cart instead of your queue and buy them right away. And you can cancel whenever you want, it's not like you have to purchase so many discs from them or else they'll charge you extra like with other music clubs.

Yeah, the site is cool and all, but the selection is weak. They do give great deals on box sets and cds from big names, but for independant music lovers, you kind of strike out.

Check it out though, the stuff you might find on there is worth the time.

Yeah, by definition, independent music isn't available in, well, most places. And I don't know anyone who listens only to independent music. :P

I told my uncle about the site around the beginning of December, and we calculated that, even though he only buys 4 or 5 CD's from "big names" a year, by buying them through yourmusic.com he can get 12 instead and pay less money than he would've for just the 4 or 5 (but he shops at Borders... at most stores, you'd have to regularly buy 5 or 6 a year before it's to your advantage to switch to yourmusic.com).

I also wouldn't call the selection weak either, I know there are a lot of people on these boards who don't own several of OLP's albums because they've never seen them in a store. yourmusic has them all though. It's no amazon.com or ebay, but it definitely has a better selection than any physical store within 100 miles of where I live.

For a lot of bands on major labels, they seem to have all of their major albums minus anything that came out in the last few months. Also, when every CD only costs $6 instead of $16, there are a lot more bands I'm willing to buy music from. Things that I like but was perfectly happy with pirated mp3's of, such as Coldplay, are now in my queue and I'll have legal copies of them eventually.

you know, that seems to me to be a good service. one of the most positive things i've seen from the music industry for some time. it's movement in the right direction.

i'd subscribe if i were in the us.

I was thinking the same thing... I've always had lots of music store options close by and I couldn't imagine it any other way
