That is assholish to make people pay to for things like access to extra stuff. It seems like everytime something like this comes up, (such as band blogs), it died just a couple months in. So then you've paid 25 bucks for some behind the scene pictures? Seriously, what is the point of them forcing you to pay. That's bs.

hmm we are a cynical bunch arent' we.

I don't know how this will pan out but other bands notably dmb has their fan site which is fairly rich but all the people i know who belong end up in the first 10 rows or every concert that they attend. That would be a nice bonus.

We don't need a club to take your money. Did you actually read the clauses you agreed to when you signed up for the CM? You'll all running up a nice big debt to us.

The band can't afford to have an amazingly fantastic site with all kinds of extras on their own... which is why we now pay. They've gotta buy webspace and bandwidth somehow.

Seriously, I don't understand why people have such a problem with a paying fan club... it's not like OLP didn't have one before.

Doesn't the label pay for websites as part of promotions? Maybe not, that was just what I always thought. Also, I don't have a problem paying for fan clubs...it's just that (at least at this point in time) I don't think that this fan club has that much to offer.

I don't have a problem with a pay site in general, depending on what they offer. Right now there isn't enough offered to justify paying for the site (except for promises of what may come).

Besides, would it really kill them to offer cool stuff to all their fans? Anyone interested in downloading the stuff is already buying their albums, concert tickets, merchandise, etc. It just seems really tacky to me to say "You owe us more money if you want anything more". Suddenly it's not about giving the fans extra goodies, it becomes charging the fans for some add-ons.

Wow. I just checked the details.

For $ 34.95 every year you get access to a chat room (which should be free), a message board (they should just turn the CC into a real message board instead of the half-baked poorly designed crap it is), ticket pre-sales (never heard of anyone missing an OLP show because they sold out), wallpapers icons and other stuff, an on-the-road video (you'll watch it once, you know it), the gift (a paste-your-name-here letter, probably written by some Sony intern, and a tour lanyard and laminate).

And this is the best of all "Member-only limited edition merchandise offers". Offers. Not "we'll give you a shirt and a poster!" They'll offer to let you PAY for some exclusive merch.

So for $35 you're getting a video, a letter, and a tour lanyard and laminate (wtf?). Oh, and "surprises". But that fell under the same heading as the wallpapers and icons, which leads me to believe that your surprises will be something online.

Oh, and $10 of that is going towards the letter and laminate "gift", since that's the only add-on from the other cheaper membership. Enjoy your gift. You know, the one that you paid for.

Didn't the PPU send out promo singles and good stuff like that? If that's the "surprise", it's cool. But if, in all probablitity, Sony doesn't want to shell out the cash for extra copies of whatever single may or may not come out in the next year, it's a rip-off. Besides, you're already paying $25 for it.

In the end though, I'm not going to pay for a band's fan site if I don't even like the (current) band any more.

K, putting aside most of what you said, I need to correct you.

Ourladypeace.com is Sony. They pay for that. The same deal with the CC.

Ourladypeace.net is completely run by the band. Sony has nothing to do with it, whatsoever. Which is why OLP promotes .net, and not .com. There's a recent interview (the Swept Away TV one), where at the end the interviewer asks them about websites. Raine says to stay away from .com because it's run by the record label, and to just go to .net, which is run by them.
