So, I'm very seriously considering going into 3D Animation and after some looking around, I came up with VanArts: http://www.vanarts.com/programs_3d/
It has exactly what I want.. but the only problem is it's in Vancouver. I live in Ontario and the farthest west I've been is Winnipeg.
The good thing is, that's where Mainframe Entertainment is, which is like my dream job (though realistically I'll probably have to find work elsewhere, but still)
Anyway, the point of this thread is that I need some info about Vancouver.. you know, what's the city like, where's some decent housing, how much am I going to be paying, etc. since moving there would be a big risk. I don't have any family there or know anybody there.
So, please help me out a little here. Oh and if you know of any 3D animation programs a little closer to home then please post those too so I can compare them to VanArts. I'm only in grade 11 now, but I want to get a good idea of what I'll be doing after I graduate so I can save up accordingly.

Vancouver's a sweet city. Rent for a small room is probably 650-800 a month (depends on where you want to live). Good places to live are Kitslano, Gastown, Downtown, some parts of North and South Burnaby, North Van. Avoid East Vancouver and Surrey like the plague. However, housing is pretty expensive right now. Transit system is awesome for most places - so should be easy to get aroudn with vehicle.
Laid-back atmosphere with tons of outdoor stuff to do minutes away, and yet you get the whole big city life with clubs and such.

I LOVE Vancouver. I think it's my favourite city in the world, certainly in North America. There are mountains and beaches and the downtown bit's really walkable and there are good shops and things. And the CMers there are lovely too.

it's a great city, no doubt about it. you want to get into 3D animation? well, this is definetly the best place to do it, with our millions of quality media schools, and even EA games is in the middle of it all.

I'm not from there, but i've been there quite a few times. What they say is true, it's a really nice city, very multicultural aswell.

I think Vancouver's really nice. However, I have lived in the area my entire life so I'm a bit biased.
It rains here. Bring/buy an umbrella. Never (well, almost never) leave home without it.
We're the set of many tv shows (ie Battlestar Gallactica) and movies.
Get a place near transit routes if you can. Especially if you ever want to go downtown (driving downtown = not so fun, clubs downtown = good times).
As for price, it depends on what you want. A friend of mine is paying $600 for a small single bedroom place. I'm paying $580 to a student residence on campus at UBC. (A couple summers ago a friend and I actually got a two bedroom basement suite for $400 each! But that was a really good deal.) I think my friends downtown are paying more *makes mental note to check*.

vancouver has practically everything near each other including a giant park and mountains to ski/snowboard plus your usual downtown shops and malls and outdoor markets and a lot of multicultural stuff and sightseeing/touring thingies. Note that it has BOTH city stuff and nature stuff. and yes, the transit system is really good. (not that i've used any other transit system.. but still. heh.)
