Ahh, those were the days...

There are so many places on Gravity where it sounds like he wants to hit some high ones, and then doesn't. I really wish Bob Rock hadn't suggested that he (forced him to) get rid of it. Some of the songs would have been a lot better with it.

Oh well. 'Tis a time of change.

that's not a *true* falsetto.... falsettos are what boy bands sing in

it is a major register shift, therefore making it falsetto however its placed in the nasal cavity to overproject. i for one miss the falsetto usage in gravity. i agree with whoever said that the lack of it makes him sound like hes straining his voice...which he probably is. it would be so much healthier to go into a falsetto around his break instead of pushing it...ah well, guess bob doesn't know that much about voice performance  or perhaps hes just looking for a buck?

I miss the falsetto too... Mostly because when he uses it, it's like he's showing his emotions through his voice. I feel like that emotion is pretty much missing in certain songs on Gravity, where it would be a great thing to use it. (Bring Back the Sun would be an awesome song, no doubt) That display of emotions is something that they had on Spiritual Machines that I really miss a lot. I'm just not feelin it on Gravity. However, I still love Gravity... *sigh I cant wait for the sixth album either... or another concert lol*

He's not exactly hitting high notes. He's augmenting his voice. ANY one of us can do it. The reason he changes his voice like that is because he CAN'T hit the high notes. On Gravity, instead of faking higher notes he uses his true singing voice which I think is a good change of pace. It allows us to appreciate what a great singer he really is.

true singing voice? you mean chest voice aka pop voice? he's not augmenting his voice at all when it goes through a major register shift like that, its simply a different placement. falsetto is generated in the head whereas chest voice reverberates in the...you guessed it, chest. it takes talent to be able to A)shift registers gracefully and B)control falsetto and integrate technique. a lot of pop singers don't utilize falsetto because they haven't developed it enough. notice that raine didn't really start using it until after naveed, when he started to take voice lessons. i think using falsetto actually showcases how far he has come in the technical aspect of using his voice to convey emotion. when he goes for the notes around his break and does not shift into falsetto, it is incredibly damaging to the voice. ever think of how much therapy broadway singers have to go through because of they way they abuse their voices?

Not supposed to? Maybe with strict church chiorish things. You can sing any way you want!

Just like you're not supposed to play guitar with distortion. It's not the real way of doing it, but it is still very usefull...

A person's voice is an instument. Any way of playing it that works is fine.

i agree with you there but you should not overuse it either. Too much distortion makes a song sound pretty crappy. Ever hear of Static X?

Hopefully that is the last time some one ever mentions Static-X on this board....

^^Yes, I agree, it can be overused. But there is still no wrong way to sing, as long as you can keep beat and stay in key, as with all instruments.

exactly. That's why i don't have a problem with raine's falsetto. I like it. But I don't think it should be overused. He uses it about the right amount on gravity. I think songs like Are You Sad? (I love this song) could have toned it down a little and let us appreciate his natural voice.

I thought it was perfect for Are You Sad. Songs like "All My Friends" overdid it for me. It still sounds great though.

wait...throat? im not sure what you're getting at. neither major register reverberates in the throat but they all are generated in the throat. if you mean that you're not supposed to sing with a head voice (falsetto) in pop music (pop=popular), that would be the tradition but not a requirement. i think it adds color to the songs when a falsetto is used.  its nice to see a singer try various techniques. monotechnical and monodynamical music can get monotonous pretty fast.

Remember that radio interview clip that was put up on www.ourladypeace.cc ?

(this is just from memory, not exact)

DJ: Can you give us a little "Iye!" squeal?
Raine: Nah, Bob Rock put an end to that.

I was thinking about it, and I don't think Rock really had that much control. I just think that Raine (being the anti-publicity kind of guy he is) was iritated that the guy was asking him to squeal (or "Iye" or whatever the DJ actually said) on air. I mean, come on, that would piss you off too. You know how degrading that would be? You have a sucessful music career, and a great talent, and some asshole wants to focus on squealing?!? I think he just made up a quick excuse to not do it.

Rock may have suggested that if they were going for a more rock-ish sound, that he shouldn't use it as much, but I doubt he actually tried to "put an end to that"...

it was kind of annoying though, cause during 'automatic flowers' at the houston show, Raine didnt do the high pitched stuff, which i think just sounds so badass. i was doin it myself and everyone around me looked at me like i was some sorta freak or something...hehe
