Just, not all of us can talk about this in the Breaking News section...

I think it was an amazing performce. Steve's backup during the Chorus was spectacular. Raine was on top of his game to...some slight error during the, "Looks like the war was in you head, not you're heart," bit. Raine seemed to have not been able to reach that note. But good.

Anyway...waits for Nikki to rip, you know, cause she's the one that rocks.

I liked the acoustic show.

But why the hell isn't Steve playing any of the lead stuff any more? Is he not the in-your-face frontman guitarist the band just had to have?

I'm starting to respect Joel's playing much more than Steve's, and I'm wondering if perhaps Joel had a larger part on the album than we thought. I mean, Steve didn't really do anything significant in the performance (anyone can play a few backup chords), which leads me to suspect that Joel wrote and recorded the lead riffs in A/L/S (making it more appropriate for him to play them live).

It just doesn't make sense that their guest/stunt/backup musician is doing more than the lead guitarist.

In fact, Steve - with his keyboard, guitar and vocals - seems to be playing the part of the stunt musician more than anything these days.

It seemed to me like Joel has done a lot of work as a studio musician, maybe also as a touring musician, I dunno... but I have a feeling he wasn't in the studio with OLP for the majority of the recording sessions. Angels Losing Sleep was around in September 2004 or before, since Jeremy played the drum part to it on the Edge. Doesn't necessarily mean the guitar part didn't evolve a lot between then and the album's release though. I assumed that Joel started working with the band pretty late in the 2 years they spent recording... and probably after most of the material was written. Otherwise, I would've expected him to go off and find other work before OLP started touring.

That said, from the breakfast with OLP videos, Joel looks like a real good guitarist. *nods*

As for Steve playing rhythm parts for all the new songs that I've seen video of so far, I dunno... I'm fairly certain Steve has more talent than what it takes to play the parts he's doing. I assume he's playing the role of stunt musician because Joel probably can't play keyboards worth crap and Duncan wants to play his lovely bass. Why Steve doesn't play lead all of the songs where he's not playing keys, I dunno.

I look forward to being able to watch this performance though. I suppose I should try again from the stream, although my connection hates streams for some reason. :(

Ooh that performance is awesome!!!

Strange about Steve not playing the lead, though. I'm pretty sure he played the lead guitar part for that at the New Haven show, along with most of the other lead parts when he wasn't playing keys...weird...

Hmm . . .

Perhaps they trade off and Joel ended up playing them on everything that's been filmed?

If Joel sucks at keyboards then why was he hired as a stunt musician, that makes no sense. Why not just find a person that can play rythem guitar and keys? I believe that Steve is very talented, i've seen him live and he's done some cool stuff, but there's definatly something going on here. From watching that video, it looks like Steve is the stunt musician, not just kinda, but in every way, the camera man doesn't even seem to be aware that he's Joel's the stunt, because Joel gets all the shots.

the performance was very good though, and Steve's a pretty good singer in his own right

Well, he was only playing stunt musician at the Breakfast, and during the later accoustic show, and during the nighttime show. And I have been wondering how much of the writing on the album was actually done by him. I was starting to wonder maybe the band realized that although he's a good guitarist, he's not gifted in the writing department, and perhaps instead of getting yet another guitarist, they decided to keep him in the band anyway.

Could be, it's also quite possible though that there's some sort internal feud going on right now that we don't know about.

Does Raine still rape him on stage? or have any interaction with him?

My guess would be that because Bob Rock brought him in as a studio musician when they were working on the album, and since there were currently only 4 of them, and he worked with them in the studio, and I assume the band liked him, they asked him to tour. *shrugs*

Couldn't there be any reason besides "Steve isn't creative," or "they aren't getting along?" If, say, Steve had started to develop carpal tunnel syndrome or something like that, would playing rhythm parts more often be less strenuous than lead?

Gah. This kind of speculation makes Nikki angry!!! NIKKI SMASH!!!!!

But anyway... me and Josh are having a debate on AIM... does anyone else think the recording might've been done separate from the video? Almost everything matches up really well for the most part, but I get that "this is mimed" vibe from it. Particularly the one part when Raine opens his mouth, but a hum comes out instead (it just isn't the right sound for how his mouth is). Also there's a little falsetto where his face is way too far from the mic and he opens his mouth slightly after the falsetto starts.

Hmm.
