tips I find useful:

first is the obvious... use quotes.
Your results will be much better if you use something like:
"our lady peace"
instead of:
our lady peace

second, site search:
I love doing searches on specific domains. For example:
duncan site:www.clumsymonkey.net
will give me results from only this website that involve duncan.

third, get rid of stuff you don't care about:
our lady peace -church
so you don't get the band confused with the church

Maybe everyone knew all of these things already but they are very useful if you don't.

I just thought of another thing I used it for a once.

I downloaded a pdf one time that had info in it I needed. The only problem was that it was written in Japanese. I used google to translate the document and got what I needed to know.

Something I love... if you throw a math problem into the search, it'll calculate it for you.

Or, if you put something like:

25 USD to CAD

It'll convert it for you.

 Google.

if you do a search for "bush baby" and then stare at your monitor for
a really long time, you can see a hidden "magic eye" image of a
deodorant stick....

I think most people already know this, but if you type in "miserable failure" and then click "I'm feeling lucky" it brings up the whitehouse.gov bio for george w bush. I read somewhere why it does that...it's actually NOT programed by the people at google. Apparently a bunch of people put the words "miserable failure" on tons of websites and made those words into a link to the gwb page. Google just picks up the fact that across the internet the term "miserable failure" is often associated with a link to that page, so it takes you there.

Now if only these techies could make whitehouse.gov play Wipe That Smile Off Your Face when you go to it...that would be classic!

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

There was a similar thing about "French military victories". Not sure if it's still like that though.

EDIT: Yeah, it's still there. Type in that phrase and click the feelin lucky button. It's rather hilarious.

I like how lots of other websites and stuff can have search features that are powered by Google. There's even a site that is just a search website that's powered by Google, but every so often when someone searches, they win an award.
