Ok, I just got a new computer that has a Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. It also has a DVD burner, which I've never had experience with before. I'm trying to rip my DVD's to my computer using Xilisoft DVD Ripper but when I try to rip it in MPEG-2, it keeps telling me that I have 100 some "underflows" in this and 300 some underflows in that. Then it tells me that I might need to increase the "mux rate" or the bitrate. Does anyone have any suggestions? Figuring this out on my own is going to take half a lifetime.

Yes, throw your dvd ripping program away. Go to www.videohelp.com and there are some articles there that will help you learn how to rip your dvd's. If I wasn't pressed for time, I'd go into detail on it. Or you can wait until tomorrow and I can tell you all about it.

p.s. Welcome back Steph! :D

Thanks Matt! For both the advice and the welcome :D

I ended up just using a decoder and then using Media Player Classic to play back the IFO files, which seems to work fine, is fast, and doesn't give me any loss of quality.

i've had that before. your autoexec.nt file isn't working.

"Note: The C:\WINNT directory on my computer may be C:\WINDOWS on other systems. Substitute as necessary when following the above instructions.

Note: If you can't find a copy of the missing file in your Repair directory, use your original Windows OS disk to get the missing files. At the command prompt type the following commands:

expand e:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand e:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand e:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

Substitute "e:" for your CD-ROM driver letter, and "c:\windows" for where your OS is located."

when you login, put in your windows cd, cancel the installer, run command prompt and type in those commands. it should fix the problem.

"You must have a modern PC with a cutting-edge CPU. Data Execution Prevention is a feature of Windows XP SP2, but it has no effect unless the CPU supports it. When a program attempts to execute code that's stored in an area of memory marked as nonexecutable, DEP prevents it. This blocks many types of attacks that viruses and other malicious software use to breach your security.

It can also, however, block programs that simply use nonstandard programming techniques such as self-modifying code. Here's how to bring this feature under control. Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties, click the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Performance panel, and click the Data Execution Prevention tab. The default setting is Turn on DEP for all programs except those I select. If you run into DEP trouble with multiple programs, you could change that to Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only. Initially, however, you'd do better to click the Add button and just add the software to the list of exceptions."

you can try that. i'm not sure it'll work though, since explorer is a essential windows program. if that doesn't work, it might be a virus, so run virus scan.

i've got a new laptop (well, new to me) and it has a high speed 56k modem. everything on the internet works very speedily, except downloads. for some reason, all downloads are excrutiatingly slow, and i don't know what to do about it. i need my downloads darnit! any suggestions?

No mater how high speed your 56k modem is it is still a 56k which means at maximum operating potential you should get to download at a rate of just under 8kbs. Generally 56ks operate at 38k which means just under 4 kbs dowload rate. So even tho it says it's high speed it won't improve download rates because of this. At least I think that is right. What are you getting for download speeds anyway?

most of my downloads barely even get going. but i know what i can try. this laptop does have wireless, so i'll go to the lounge some time and try there, since there's a wireless network there. that should work. wireless should be faster.

Well if you really do, let me know ;)

Anyhow, my connection was being iffy, I was able to post a couple of times but even that was sketchy.

New question: why can't I attach my zipped file of pictures to an email in yahoo? It is pissing me off. A box shows up that says "this document contains no data". It does it in hotmail.com
