Formal Literary Analysis of 'Annabel Lee' by Edgar Allan Poe

The classic poem 'Annabel Lee' by Edgar Allan Poe captured my attention with it's passionate, emotional description of the speaker's feelings towards his lost love.

The poet's style of writing really interested me, being so beautifully descriptive and flowing, yet it can be so blunt and straightforward. For lack of better words, it's a very appealing mixture. The lines “For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams / of the beautiful Annabel Lee; / And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes / of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (34 – 37) absolutely sends chills down my spine, while the closing lines nearly bring tears to my eyes: “And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side / of my darling, - my darling, - my life and my bride / In her sepulchre there by the sea - / In her tomb by the sounding sea” (38 – 41). It truly is the beauty and the simplicity of the poem that really attracted me.

As descriptive as the poem is, it is saturated with passion and emotion that really hits every nerve. The speaker's words are carefully chosen, so the reader really cannot misinterpret the story. The entire fifth stanza is the perfect example of this, especially lines 30 – 33: “And neither the angels in Heaven above, / nor the demons down under the sea / can ever dissever my soul from the soul / of the beautiful Annabel Lee”. This adds to the beauty of the poem so much, and really gives the reader a clear impression of the speaker's emotional positions throughout it, as well.

One can really make a connection to 'Annabel Lee'. This melancholic poem pulls you in and gets to you, mentally. The aforementioned lines 34 – 41 are, in my personal opinion, the most strongest lines in the poem, if you consider how depressed the reader can get towards the end of this disheartening ode. The poet seems to take advantage of the fact that it is usually easier to dampen someone's spirit than it is to make him smile, and, of course, this poem is no exception.

Edgar Allan Poe's timeless poetry and novels all have their own form of passion and despair, but it is 'Annabel Lee' that had always stood out for me.
