St. Anger was Metallica's last album... which was also produced by Bob Rock.

At one point, I remember OLP saying they wanted the raw feel of St. Anger for the new album. I cringed, because St. Anger is possibly the worst produced album ever aside from the one I produced.

With the release of Spiritual Machines in 2000, Our Lady Peace did the unthinkable by releasing a brilliant concept album that was more accomplished artistically than 1998's Happiness…is Not a Fish That You Can Catch.

The reviewer can't be that much of an OLP fan considering that he can't even get his dates right. Any true OLP fan would know that Happiness was released in september 1999 (not 1998).

To me, the songs on HIPT sound a lot more raw than they do on gravity (I don't have a clue what this guy thinks he's talking about). For example, I hear Raine's falsetto again on HIPT whereas it was almost non existant on Gravity (except for the "I remember feeling low" part in Innocent). Also, including a song like "Al Genina" would not be something that I would expect from a overproduced album. To be honest, I feel that HIPT is a very well made album.

As person that listens to a lot of music everyday, i can say that there's nothing wrong with OLP. They're a solid, melodic, staple in Canada's
scene. There's nothing wrong with either of the new albums, and in their own right they're very good and I would choose them over a lot of other bands. But i don't think some people understand where some of us "Bitter Purists" are coming from. At least in my case the fact of the matter is I'm a ALTERNATIVE fan, i love ALTERNATIVE music. That's why i don't really feel the same about OLP anymore. It's not about selling out, or production, or Mike leaving. It's not because they're musically unsound, and it's not because i hate them. They don't make alternative music anymore, simple as that. OLP were definatly at one point an edgy, somewhat odd band. And many of us purists listened to them because of it, not because of how much they loved their fans or because how "hot" Raine was. Because they no longer make that kind of music anymore we don't find them as apealing. It's the same as is they started making Jazz or Country, most of the current fans now wold leave them, because they don't like Jazz, they like pop-rock. It's nothing to do with bitterness, OLP just arn't teh same band that we loved back then.

This in no way is intended to start another Gravity sux, or OLP sold out thread, I don't want to see it turn out that way. But i think Some of us "Purists" needed a little defence, and for some one to explain the reason why we don't love new olp as much. It seems like most of the time we're consider no true fans, shit disturbers, bitter, and un-open minded, which is unfair. Raine disliked U2 during the 90's era, but no one questions his respect for the band, it's teh same with us

lol yeah so anyways point is i don't want this to degrade into a fight but i think some OLP fans should cut us some slack, everyone acts like they're the minority, but really we're the ones made to feel like we have no right to comment

One thing that bothers me about Mr. Rock's production is that he seems to pull for songs to be on the record that quite simply aren't that good, as trys to force them into something they're not.

For example on Gravity, he pulled for OLP to keep working on "Made of Steel" to get that on the record. I remember reading an article where the band wanted to drop it, but Bob kept pulling for it (not that it's bad to tell a band to keep working on a song, but you have to know when to move ont). And in my opinion Made of Steel is the worst song on Gravity.

On dual disc OLP talk about how Bob really wanted "Walking In Circles" on the album, and once again this is a song that doesn't really go any where. The chorus isn't that catchy the guitars aren't inspiring. It's a B-side quality track yet it's on the album.

I think you see this with over produced albums, that a band has to rework a song a hundred times to get it right, sometimes you just have to let the song find itself. And a good producer should know when to leave well enough alone.

Can you guys imagine what OLP would be like if the chose Rick Rubin or Brendan O'Brien instead of Bob Rock?

I'm not sure, I'd personally like to see them with lanni again, because he seemed to hold a piece of that winning formula that made us love OLP.

But that definitly will not happen, for now, there's nothing wrong with Rock, maybe they'll switch on their next album.

Umm...I love "Walking in Circles". I think it's the song on HIPT that sounds the most like old OLP.
And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignore because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out
What's wrong

i think so, too. it's one of the only ones that doesn't sound so... simple. and underproduced. *shrugs*

Rick Rubbin did the Red HOt Chilli Peppers

Brendan O'Brien has been connected to like 50% of the cool albums to come out in the last 15 years, everything from Soundgarden to Incubus to The Music.

I like Brendan O'Brien as a choice, but I'm not so sure about Rick Rubin. I think he's done decent stuff, but I just don't know. I like Rich Costey. I know a lot of people don't know of him, but he's coincidentally worked with about a half a dozen artists I have CDs of, and I think all of them are worthwhile.

It's amusing how people are already discussing a new producer.
